Like your criteria! Very well said German1967. And points well taken on the concern on the M brand Gnaluzu. Too much dilution and the M is getting applied all over the place. Nomenclature aside I'm just glad fun cars are still getting built. and very glad this car is coming out and one of the first cars I have been excited about in a while after driving it. And that red car above is beautiful combo! also loving the blue....

who cares? faster than an M2....and faster, quicker and better in every measurable way than any Z car to come before it......even the ones with an M in the name.

....oh and since I picked up my car yesterday, I can confirm that the M40i, in Canada, has the side M badge as well as the M seatbelts.
Cheers, Dave on edit; the seatbelts were optional. Last edited by DPelletier; 06-17-2019 at 10:35 AM.. Reason: clarification |

Anyone who thinks an X5M is more deserving of the M badge than the Z4 M40i is arguing on behalf of BMW’s marketing department (albeit unintentionally). I’ve owned multiple generations of M3 and they all had significant compromises. All brilliant cars, but always compromised. Once they used M for tarted up SUV’s it was obvious that M doesn’t meant motorsport. That’s ok! But to argue that a bloated SUV with an overboosted engine is more M than a roadster with 380+ hp is silly.
Either way I don't think anyone should feel inadequate because their amazing car doesn’t have the right badges. Let your driving do the talking. |

That was sort of my view of things. The M was a pretty specific thing and then once the SUV versions started popping up prior to the m performance models, it seemed clear that it wasnt quite so cut & dry - or at least not so cut & dry so far as it mattered to me personally. I prefer badgeless cars anyway

Think the M thing as super special has passed into history when they added the SUV's.

The Z4 is a single-purpose built vehicle. Most M cars are tuned family cars in my opinion. Anyway, the M/ non M issue I think is dividing the BMW-family. I ask my self what is the point of the discussion (which I unfortunately contributed to at the top...couldn´t help myself...)? Had the same in the Porsche community, driving a Boxster - poor mans 911

Having said all of this ... my G29 is "only" the sdrive 30i M-Sport model and not the M40i. Wanted the M40i, but since I will likely only drive 4-5k miles per year and this will site in the garage most of the time, I couldn't justify a lease payment twice the price ... only paying $450/mo on a loaded 30i Exec fit the bill for a summer weekend toy. I would also agree that the M40i and M550i and every other ///Marketing vehicle of BMW of recent years which doesn't have an "S" engine and further ///M development/tuning is not a "true" ///M car. Having de-badged all of my BMWs including my ///M variants, I would have ripped off the side emblems and happily given them to any willing party if I had them here in the US. Not sure why everyone feels the need to advertise the model they bought .... the car looks so much cleaner with no model badges, front plate, etc. |

I think the M badge is deserved. Car is equally as fast as Outgoing M3. Yes 2019 M3. Thats a fact. Maybe a 10th slower than a M4 Comp. An M5 is the real M car at 2.8 0-60. Yes New Corvette fast. The New M3 and M4 will again lack real performance.

Looks good think I will try it out & rattle some chains at the next BMW club meeting. Also running a JB4.
Already rattle purests chains with a COYOTE in the COBRA. Based on an early M4 specs (3.8 seconds) the Z4 will out run the new 510bhp M4 to 60. Expect the M4 will run it down in the quarter mile

Nice cobra. My brother built a cobra. Boy was it fast. Not great traction from start. But it didn't matter it was so fast. Toasted my 2014 Corvette from a rolling start.

I’ve been in Germany with a US spec and noticed immediately several of my Euro spec cousins had the ///m emblems on the side (as do all varieties of other BMWs w/ m-sport packages). I considered adding them myself, but then ended up going the complete opposite direction; I had the Z4 and M40i removed from the trunk lid. I believe that delete is also a factory option for the Euro spec orders, and the more I saw it, the more I liked it.

Post returns from the dead. At the end added the M side badge as I liked the way it looks.
Did not de-badge my 2022 M4C nor did I offend myself by adding the ///M side badges to the Z4M40i which is already littered with M badges including the sacred right side of the trunk lid location.
