Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres

I appreciate the car is a RWD so it is never going to be great in the damp, but it was verging on being undrivable yesterday when I came home in the drizzle. The back end was so twitchy it was dangerous. There's still plenty of tread on the rear tyres so I'm just wondering whether a different set of tyres would help. Being in the UK it rains a lot, so have any members had more luck with a different set of tyres? Or is this going to be something I'm going to have to put up with? I should add they're run flat tyres, not sure that makes much difference?

Hi,are you sure they are run flats ? I thought they were purely because you do not get a spare wheel and tyre, however reading on here last week it appears that they are not.I just checked the sidewalls of my Pilots and I cannot see that they are run flats,as no markings.I could be wrong and stand to be corrected.

I have only had mine for two weeks and when I picked it up from the BMW garage I was horrified how it tram lined so badly on the Motorway white lines. So much so that I told my wife to be aware when she drove it.When I got home I checked the tyre pressures as I had a warning message up.The BMW garage had not checked the pressures properly and one front was 10psi over and the rest were out as well.
Adjusted and now handles like a dream in the dry.I haven't tried it in the wet as yet.

I'm pretty sure they're run flats. But not certain. The pressures are correct.

Standard M40i tires in the US are non run flats. No spare.

Hi Robsey, I'm from the UK too (the North to be exact) and the weather has been utter sh*t lately.

I picked up my new Z4 M40i about 3 weeks ago and in the rain it definitely feels very twitchy when in Sport+ or Sport.

I've had an M4 in the past and I'd say it's twitchier than that.

Will definitely be keeping it in comfort mode when it's raining and the road is wet.

1) stock tires are not run flats

2) the MPSS are way stickier than most other performance tires, particularly the PZero's I had on my Jag.

.....If you take it easy you should have no traction problems in the rain. ....snow and ice are a different matter

All thinks being equal a short wheelbase high horsepower car will be more reactive than one with a longer wheelbase.

I currently have the Pilot Sport Cup 2s and they are great in the dry but in the wet they're sketchy although Tire Rack give them a good wet rating, when time comes to replace them I'll get something much less aggressive.

It's a daily driver so I'm planning to get winter tires, I've seen that BMW makes 17 in wheels and has a package but it's $2,000, Tire Rack says smallest wheel that will clear brakes is 18 in and they don't have any winter tires in yet for the M40i but will in a couple of months.

I've a set of 17s with Blizzaks that I used on both my E85 3.0i and E89 35is but sadly the bolt pattern is different on the G29.

I find them OK, you just have to be a bit gentle with your right foot coming out of corners, especially when the tyres are cold. I generally find Sport is fine but Sport Plus isn't a good idea in the wet.

I had Conti Winter TS860Ss on from December to June and they were no better really.

PS I find them a lot better at around 33psi (I think it's the comfort setting). The other setting (not sure what it's called) has them at around 39psi and they're definitely less grippy.

Just replaced stock PSS for PS4S in stock size (specifically chose BMW Star front and rear, though I have read that front Stars 255/35/R19 are really designed to be a rear tire). Had 20k miles on originals, and the last few trips in the rain caused concern. Have read that PS4S have better wet handling than PSS, though I haven't had opportunity to try new rubber in the rain.

Overall, the few miles I have put on the new shoes makes me think that the PS4S have a slightly softer ride than stock PSS . . .jury still out.

No spare indeed. I keep a scissor jack behind rear seat in box that i got from harbor freight. Fits perfect and don't even notice. 18inch breaker bar with 17mm socket in my trunk. Bought a spare rim with tire 255 35 19 that will fit front or back. I keep this on the side of my house by garbage pails. Had a blowout the other day on the highway. Sent an UBER to my house to pick up my tire and get it to me. Way better than waiting for a flatbed to show up. Works for me when i am Local. My rears were worn. I replaced all Tires with Federal Evolution ST-1 that i purchased even before i took delivery. (I too thought they were RunFlats prior to Purchase) Hate Runflats with the exception of doing 120 plus Mph.
I like the Federals they ride smoother and still handle well. Not as well as Pilots but only Cost Me $600 for a set.

I plan on driving mine in the canyons when it arrives. Should I be worried about the handling at all? Definitely don’t want anything happening there!

Yesterday I replaced a Michelin Pilot Super Sport rear right tire due to a nail at 7,300 miles. Those things go for $400 each!

Fortunately I only had to pay the $50 deductible because I paid for the Tire and Wheel Protection at $1,672 about 10 months ago when I bought the car.

3 more tires within the warranty period and I will be financially even.

I had to bring the car to the dealership since it was covered by the tire & wheel warranty. I call it the "BMW" tax.
