Wind Deflector

Hi Everyone.

Newbie here.

I've just bought a 2019 m40i, love it!

It hasn't got a wind deflector though and I'm wondering whether it's worth retro fitting one. Seems v pricey, wondering if its worth it.

Thoughts welcome!

Matt

There are three different schools of thought when it comes to using the wind deflector.
  • Use the BMW mesh deflector that comes with the car in the US.
  • Don't use any deflector at all.

I am a member of the last group for two reasons.
  • I like the cleaner look of the car with the top down and the deflector removed. In my opinion, removing it gives the car a more aggressive and sportier appearance.
  • At night I feel that the mesh deflector affects my visibility when looking in the rear view mirror. Everything looks a little darker.

That being said there have been times when I have taken road trips at high speeds with my wife and she insists that we use the mesh deflector and keep the windows up because the wind turbulence is too strong for her to ride comfortably. When driving alone at high speeds this is a non issue as I love the feeling of the wind hitting my body and simply blast the radio to drown out any outside noise. This is where I think that the HK sound system does have an advantage over the standard system that comes with the car.

Sheesh... seems these glass ones are getting more and more expensive.

Wish it was possible to get it etched with ///M Performance or Z4 on the bottom instead of brand logo.

It's definitely a better look IMO and more effective with visibility. Heavily considering getting one. I've tried to not use one at all... but too much wind in the cabin.

BTW: Got a Malware warning from my anti-virus when going to this link. I would not advise.

Thanks all - I'm guessing as there isn't one fitted I need to get suitable roll bars too, to affix it to, it won't just slide into the ones I have? TIA

I wish we could convince (group buy ?) the folks at https://windrestrictor.com/ to make one for our G29. I had one of their wind restrictors in my Miata years ago and really liked it.

I ran across these on eBay, will probably soon pull the trigger on one or the other.

It is standard on US cars. It was/is an option on some Euro G29s. If it didn't come as an option on the car, they also have to replace the roll bar covers with the slotted covers.

Did you buy it from a dealer or private sale? As with a lot of dealer used sales, bits go missing, for some reason (if it’s private, I don’t know).

I have seen companies that offer wind deflectors that have a velcro strap that wraps around the bars to secure it.

Those are usually plastic & looks not so good. Better change the roll bar cover with rails, slide in the glass wind defector.

BMW m40i frozen orange.

The wind break makes a massive difference to the styling of the car…. Not to mention it’s functionality. All my New Z4 have had a BMW windbreak fitted as standard. Love it…. I know it’s expensive but I have a brand new spare one that will fit your car. You would need to get the head rest inserts first unless you have them already. I live in Uppingham. Steve.

Interestingly living in Texas at 104deg weather, I removed the wind breaker to get more air circulated, I probably will not put it in again and it looks so much cleaner. When winter comes around, I probably going to get the glass shott as well, but for now, it's empty.
