Advice/Experience moving heavy items?

So I recently moved into a new house and have *almost* everything moved over. I am now trying to figure out how to move my gun safe. With the door it is ~1,000 lbs, and probably close to 750 lbs after I remove the door.

I won't have an issue taking it out of my old house, but in my new house I have to go down a 30% grade on grass to get to my basement walkout.

Anyone have experience with this and any tips or tricks? I don't mind spending money on good tools as long as it's not more than 50% more than what I would pay someone else to do the work (~$250 from initial quotes).

I have me and 3 decently strong friends that would be able to assist with the move currently.

Hire a company. It will be worth it. They have the tools/experience and if you damage your back or any of your friends, it will not have been worth it.

If it was a smaller 200-300 lb I could see moving it

I helped a lot of moves in the past 20 years. I finally paid a moving company last year for the first time, and it was definitely worth it.

It is on the main floor, which was less of an issue with a good appliance dolly. Itis going down the hill I am worried about.

I just don't get the $240 an hour (billed from the time they leave their building to the time they get back to their building) and I think that is grossly overpaying to move one item, especially since they could take as long as they want to.

I believe in doing stuff myself when able as it usually is done better.

That was my first thought as that is what it was delivered on, but still have an issue as soon as I get on grass, and a hill.

Come to think of it, they are building a house a half block away from me... wonder if they would use one of the forklifts to assist for $100. Then it is just moving it normally.

Most of them have a brake like a bicycle on them. Just use the brake and a spotter or two when going downhill. As far as the grass as long as it’s not angled to the left or right you could lay down a couple rows of cardboard on the grass

This may be a silly question..... but is there any way to just drive down the grade and unload at the basement door? Come in from another angle?

Afraid not. Both houses on the side of me are for sale (newer development) and I am pretty sure they wouldn't want me to drive on the grass otherwise this would be the easy option/answer.

his magic is likely to weak to lift the safe...as such he should hire Dumbledoor movers.

but I wouldnt attempt it; idk I am fairly strong and go to the gym; but lifting heavy; uneven objects requires tools and know-how

A big advantage of paying real movers is that they will be bonded/insured, so if they let it slip and it takes out part of the back wall, you aren't on the hook. You also don't have to keep saying 'sorry you lost those toes' to your friend. If you are determined to go DIY, hiring the construction guys to use their forklift or caterpillar would be a good idea - wrangling a load on uneven ground can be quite challenging if you aren't experienced w/driving them.

Yeah honestly like quite a few mentioned I would rather hire someone who will get the right amount of people and the right tools and equipment for the job than risking effing yourself up, your buddies, the yard, the house and probably not so much on the safe

Movers, without question, to avoid any potential for you or your friends getting injured. Call around for more quotes. Maybe someone in your favorite gun shop or wherever you bought the safe has a suggestion for a reliable, reasonably priced mover.
