Welcome to the wonderful world of German electronics. It looks like it is reading the USB, since you can see all the music. Have you tried the tilting the controller to the left thing? Not sure why they just can’t include that as one of the options in the list you are displaying but oh well. Something else to try is when you get to that display (the one you took a picture of) try pressing the option button. I know BMW likes to hide some features behind that button instead of just including it in the menu list.
Let us know if you have any luck. I’m going to try to do the same thing this weekend when I have some time. Good luck. |

I said it once and I’ll say it again, it’s a great drivers car. Definitely built for driving, but the Germans can not come even close to the Japanese when it comes to electronics and ease of use. A Honda Accord has better media and communication technology than my Z4, but no, that doesn’t mean I would trade my Z4 for an Accord. It just means that BMW focuses on one thing, driving, and Honda focuses on electronics. |

Some time back I saw a video of how much effort BMW put into picking the tones which come out of the dash. I really wish they spent as much time on their electronics and manuals.
I also wonder why they can't standardize where they put all of their buttons. The ACC buttons on my 4 Series are in totally different places than on my Z4 and I'm still pushing the wrong buttons in each car.

I have a newer entertainment manual than Combatcrew2. I’m too lazy to post a screenshot, but it looks like the system might download from the USB automagically. Try leaving the USB stick installed with the entertainment system powered up for a while and see if that doesn’t do the trick.
But then if you read the manual a different way, it almost implies that you can’t permanently download music from a USB to a hard drive. Honestly, I don’t see any evidence that there is even a hard drive on the newer Z4. Go to the BMWUSA website for owners and download a copy of your manuals. There are two, one for the car and one for the nav/communications/entertainment system. Good luck. I’m pretty sure Kafka did the translating from German to English. After a little more research, I’m pretty sure the 2022 Z4 does not have a hard drive. In other words, you can’t download USB stick contents permanently to the vehicle.
Not sure when this happened, maybe 2021, maybe 2020 models, but definitely the 2022 doesn’t have a hard drive. |

My first and only BMW that had a hard drive was my 2015 M4. I downloaded all my CD's off my thumb drive right onto the car's hard drive. And the hard drive was right on media menu. Neither M550i (2018, 2020) had a hard drive and I didn't see one on my 2022 Z4 in the two months before I put it in hibernation for the winter. Now I just have to leave my thumb drive in the slot to play my CD's or put it in if that's what I want to listen to.

It's not the same as having the music downloaded to a hard drive and it's not even really a work around, but this is what I do and I'm happy with it. I have all my music loaded onto my iPhone, ~3500 songs. Then I use Apple Car Play. It has access to all my Playlists, Songs, Artists and Albums on my phone. It works well.

I just store my music on my iPhone's hard drive and use the Apple Music app to play songs on my Z4 using CarPlay.
