Individual colors for the Z4???

Is there a reason why the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria is not able to produce individual colors?

If they were available would you order one for the approximately $4500-$5000 price and what would it be?

I inquired in August when I was contemplating ordering my Z4, specifically because I would have done individual paint again. The dealership could not advise me why, but only that it was not offered at the plant where the two brands were assembled.

Would I have ordered individual paint if available? Absolutely! I did rosso corsa (aka Ferrari red) and cognac on my 2020 M550i and for me it was worth every penny of the $5000.00 it cost. I would have done Yas Marina on the Z4. Had an F82 in Yas and loved it enough to want another!
Since individual was not an option on the Z4, my dealership was able to do a dealer trade with a nearby dealer who had one incoming that worked for me. Here's a shot of my M550i after numerous exterior mods. M850 gloss black wheels, gloss black trim, CF mirror caps, spoiler and painted gloss black lower bumper trim.

A friend of mine wanted his Z4 M40i in Mediterranean blue, but that's only available on the 30i. He tried to see if BMW would do it as an individual color, but the answer was no.

It's too bad the Z4 can't be built with individual colors. The existing color palette is rather limited.

The 50th Anniversary press articles indicate that historic BMW special colors will be available soon (sounds like after Feb 28) on certain cars. Not specific about whether they'll only be for M only or if M Performance might also be offered some. Remember that at first, BMW said the 50th badges would only be an option for M, but later said M Performance also would qualify. You think they'll add colors for Z4?

It makes no sense that they wouldn't do a special order for the Mediterranean blue on the M40i.

I might have ordered mine in Med Blue but it is only available in a 30i non-M Sport. I wonder how many 30i's actually sold as "Sport Line"? Not a fan of that design.

That's the extra weird thing about Z4 colors. There are 2 colors that you can only get if you don't order an M40i. And you can't even get the M Sport on it if you want those colors. What?! Usually, car companies give you MORE color choices, or even exclusive choices on the more expensive models, not LESS.

This is likely due to the small production number of Z4 & BMW not able to provide all colors.

It may be an issue with the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria factory not being setup to produce custom colors the way BMW does it elsewhere?

It is probably because they do not want to slow down the assembly line to ship vehicles to/from their outside paint booths. It does share with the supra afterall.

Don't forget that they are the largest contract manufacturer in the world and are making vehicles not just for BMW and Toyota but for a number of car companies so custom colors may be an issue for them.

Not sure what 5 series is built there. Thinking their research is a little lacking. Both my 2018 and 2020 M550i (with individual rosso corsa) were built at Dingolfing.

WELCOME TO BMW GROUP PLANT DINGOLFING.
BMW Group Plant Dingolfing is the BMW Group’s largest vehicle production site in Europe: Last year, around 232.000 BMW vehicles rolled off the assembly lines. The site manufactures a wide range of cars – currently models of the 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Series, as well as the new all-electric BMW iX. Components for BMW’s electric vehicles and car bodies for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars are also manufactured here. On top of that, Dingolfing is at the center of the BMW Group’s global spare parts logistics network. In total, the location has a workforce of approx. 17,000 people, plus 850 apprentices.

Magna Styr Cant do Individual colors

Theres a specific reason why you cant get Individual anything in the Z4. Its because BMW doesn't control or run the Magna plant in Austria where the Z4 is built. Magna builds cars for several OEMs (not including Toyota) in this same plant so they cant handle any extra complexity. Its another reason why the Z4 cars have only a few option packs. BMW has devised a way to make money in their own plants when they do 1 off colors charging $5K but Magna cant.

The world market leader of the upper middle class will also be built in Austria. The BMW G30 5 Series has found a new home at Magna Steyr in Graz, because the Dingolfing factory alone cannot handle the volume needed for the new business athlete. The production in Graz officially started on March 1, 2017, the beginning of a BMW 520d with M Sport Package in Alpine White.

Looks like we were both right! I had no idea that they handled some of the overload for the 5 series. Obviously though, any individual paint orders are done in Dingolfing. Another day, another fact learned!

I meant other OEMs in addition to Toyota

everyone on this already site knows that Toyota Supras are built alongside the Z4 at Styr in Graz.

Likely on the 5 series BMW only builds simple configuration 5 series cars for fleet customers or for dealer stock at Magna. That would allow them to add 5 series production at Magna while keeping production of the higher value (priced) 5 Series cars in Dingolfing.

I think we are talking about two different things. BMW AG = Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or just BMW. Others are talking about the actual manufacturing plant which builds the cars for BMW.
