Safe to order a new M40i now?

As stated in a previous post I purchased a 2020 M40i from Carvana but refused the vehicle due to damage. I am attempting to purchase new from a local dealer. After reading all the posts it appears that the touch screens are back. Is there any reason not to place an order now, other than price? Can anyone give me an idea of a reasonable wait/build time? Great board, thanks in advance

It appears the touchscreens are back. If you want the car, place the order and get all the options you want. With the chip shortage going strong still, I would recommend patience as it might take 4-5 months from order to receipt. Bad, but not as long as a Form 4 from the ATF.

Now is a good of a time as any, your salesperson might be able to tell you if anything will be missing from the build, though they might not know until it enters production.

I put a deposit down for an ordered (Alpine White / magma red) M40i in mid Dec. The order was placed in the dealer system for BMW visibility, but salesperson didn't expect anything to happen until after the holidays. They will have to be given an allocation and then a build date. Salespereson said they expected everything to be available but wouldn't be sure until they get a production number that should show the build. I have right of refusal if any features are missing that are important to me. The only option I do not have in the build is Active Cruise Control. I have it on my Jeep Grand Cherokee cause it was standard. Nice to have, but not a must for me. I am retired, so don't commute or drive in heavy traffic much. Still debating whether I'll add it or not.

I ordered a 40i in December and insisted on and got a confirmed order on all the "forbidden fruit" that I wanted i.e. HUD, Rear Backup Camera and Adaptive Headlights.

Just hope they dont pull a fast one on me during production and go on a deletion binge.

Just keep in mind that at this point dealers still don't have any reason to give you a deal and you'll probably be paying full sticker (or more).
Tough to say when or if things will change on that front though...

Unfortunately sales on used cars have skyrocketed too. I wish you the best of luck.. not sure if you can or would prefer to, but it might be a better idea to wait until this shortage blows over (supposedly next year)

Pretty much place your order & take your chances. I don't think anyone can guaranty at this time that all the stuff will be in the car.

When it comes in if it does not have what you ordered refuse delivery.

Just a datapoint. I placed an order in mid Dec. Sent multiple dealers the build code (all in the SouthEast) and asked them for their best price. All replied promptly. Only one was at MSRP and the others were below anywhere from 1-3K.

I didn't know dealers like that existed. I sent a build code out and supplied a ton of requested data about my trade (including pictures of my tires!) and they won't make an offer until we talk about financing. ARRRGGG

They asked you for all that and didn't make an offer on your trade? Something's not right.
Maybe see what Carmax offers.

Only thing that may give me pause is the face lift that's supposed to be introduced late in the year, first deliveries in spring 2023.

But changes are likely minimal, you will beat yourself up not having a roadster during nice weather and if there is a color combo you really like - go for it!

Two possible reasons for this.

1) They want to make sure you can afford it (e.g. your credit is sufficient) before giving you a price; or

2) They want to make sure you financing through them rather than on your own because they make money off the financing.

That sounds like a lot of BS. My dealer was happy to give me a quote for a trade-in and there was absolutely no discussion about financing. I finally went to Carmax as they offered me $2k more than the dealer but the main issue is how the dealer is treating you.

1) I ordered mine with all the options: Active Cruise Control, Harmon Kardon, Premium Package, Shadowline Package, Driver Assistance Package, all-weather mats, Steering Wheel, Keys etc. Mine went into production on Aug 7th and I received it from dealer on Dec 27th.

They've lost their collective minds in Austria, so don't expect it to get any better any time soon, even if the "World Supply-Chain Issues" go away.

But I will say this. I love the car. It's the best driving car I've ever driven. The electronics aren't as user friendly as my Japanese cars but I don't think that's the point with a Z4. A Z4 is all about the drive. So with that in mind, I love it. Definitely happy with the purchase...and I have all of 112 miles on her so far. The weekend after I picked it up winter weather hit, so she's grounded until Spring.

2) Do you mind telling me about your Carvana issue? What kind of damage did it come with? Did they tell you about the damage before showing up in your driveway? How bad was the damage?

Thanks.

The damage was under the front bumper cover and I do not believe it could have been caused by a few curb strikes. A new bumper cover would have probably repaired most of the damage but not all. Carvana lists areas of damage but they did not list this.

It probably would not have made a difference, but I don't have a trade. All asked if I had my own financing, which I do. One dealer will give me well over 3K off if I finance thru them (Tier 1 bank, not BMW Finance). I can refinance, without any penalty, after making 4 payments with the Tier 1 bank. Thought that might be BS, but I checked it out with USAA and it is not uncommon.
