*** Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #58: "Tones in Greyscale" ***

*** Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #58: "Tones in Greyscale" ***

Theme and Rules: Create a study for tones in black and white. This is not just a "black and white" theme. Make the photograph about the tones, not the subject. The subject should still be interesting, but only because you've allowed a use of greyscale tonal values that give the image life. Don't just remove the saturation, make a study out of it. We're not looking for the best black and white photograph, we're looking for the best photograph with the best use of black and white.

Important Dates: Entries must be submitted no later than Wednesday, July 18th at 11:59pm PST. Voting begins the following day.

GENERAL RULES:
1. Any interpretation of the theme that falls within Bimmerpost.com rules is welcome.
2. You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image.
3. One submission per contest, and you cannot resubmit a photo that you've submitted before in a previous contest.
4. Images must be no larger than 1024 px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 1024 px for the poll.
5. All contestants must host their own pictures (which includes hosting them on Bimmerpost).
6. All images must have a title.
7. While post processing in Photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photo-chopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.

Twisted cedar with snow:

Untitled by dcstep, on Flickr

Click on it to see it in a larger size, where I think that it works much better. I added a lot of grain and in the Original size it shows too much, but it works in the 2048 size. The grain effect looks like softness here. (I used a TriX grain on top of an Ilford film emulation).

Spanner, you really want to use an image at the limit of the size constraint (1024 on the long side) to show your image to best effect. Nice shot, but you'll penalize your entry if you don't put it up to the size limit.

Thanks Dave.
I tried to do that with Flickr, but for some reason, I kept getting a red X, and went to Photobucket, where the images are smaller. There used to be a way to chose your image size with Photobucket, but I don't see it anymore.
I have had a lot of problems with Flickr and the red X thing, but I guess that I'll have to try again.

Do you have a "Pro" account. I think you may need that. I have that and upload the Original file and can download the BBCode for any size by clicking on Share. If you only uploaded a small file, then that's all you can share.

Great shot, BTW.

Beautiful Buildings of Belgrade

Even in full color the city looks grey. Not all the buildings were as pretty as this one...

rodi, can you give me an example of what you're looking for in this contest? How is this different from straight up B&W editing?

should be a study of black and white tones. chances are, if you didn't have to shoot it at least twice in black and white to get what you were going for, then it doesn't work.

or maybe not. just explore what kind of interesting images you can get out of a tonal range in greyscale.
