Whatcar review Z4 vs Audi TT. This is one of the most negative reviews of the Z4 I have seen so far:

The moment they called the Z4's transmission "sluggish" I knew there had to be something wrong with that review. Its basically known by everyone that BMW 8-Speed ZF transmission is one of the best traditional automatics. Its been said in countless reviews by auto-magazines and owner reviews.

I strive not to fall into the habit of seeking out reviews that feed into my confirmation bias, and therefore I was excited to see a 'negative' review posted. However, it became apparent to me as well, that there was something fishy with this review.

Also, what finally made up my mind was the last bit where they were summarizing the 'Positives' and 'Negatives' for each car, and dinged the Z4 for more body roll in the corners. If you look at the images of each car they provide as evidence, you can clearly see they either shot the picture of the Z4 at slightly exaggerated angle or rotated the image in post production. The article lost all credibility with me at that point.

A mushy ZF 8HP? Have they lost their minds?!

That was the dumbest thing Ive read in a while and the persistent subhead of "The old BMW Z4 wasn’t much fun to drive" is equally absurd.

Either the 30 is a LOT different than i thought it'd be or this is a paid advertisement for audi.

Hell, they had already made their case before it was even released. https://www.whatcar.com/news/used-te...-bmw-z4/n15934

"So, to see if the Z4 can finally take on sports cars such as the Audi TT Roadster..." #LOL

I am awaiting delivery of my Z4, so I clearly think the ZF is perfectly fine.

That said, having owned a recent Audi DSG and Porsche PDK I would agree the ZF is mushy in comparison. Dual clutch gearboxes done correctly are noticeably quicker.

Good to see more SF Red cars around in these latest tests. I got tired of the blue and frozen grey - plus my SFR M40i is about to be delivered!

Quite true. In comparison to those amazing dual clutch examples, I can concede that one might refer to the ZF as inferior.

Like you, having driven the M40i, I am happy with its performance at this price point. It will feel light years ahead of my most recent experiences: a Ford 6R80 with Select Shift, and an 70's era TH350 with a mild performance rebuild and shift kit.

Also, one publication's take on the ZF 8HP vs. DCTs.

I currently have an F type V8S with the ZF and just ordered an M40i; I don't find either "mushy", even when compared to the Boxters and 911's PDK that I drove. Most reviewers seem to agree.

Cheers,
Dave

‘This review has been updated with test results’

I think they’ve been reading some of this forum’s analysis:

“Pricing Matters
The four-cylinder Z4 sDrive30i starts at $50,695, undercutting the Porsche 718 Boxster by almost $10,000 but also ceding 45 horsepower to the mid-engined droptop. The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i opens at $64,695 and arguably makes a better foil to the Boxster with the promise of more power and much more standard equipment. We won't decide that contest here, but we can confidently say it is closer than ever before.”

It's funny reading the old responses to these stickied threads; biggest complaints seem to come from the BMW crowd.....probably because the Z4 (and 8 series) look so different than earlier BMW models.....different and nicer to my eye.

From my perspective, I'd say thanks to BMW for making a more serious sportscar that looks great, handles great and offers stellar performance compared to previous Z cars for a reasonable price. Without the G29, I'd have had to pay the 36% premium for a Boxster S to get a car I'd be happy with.

Setting this particular review aside for one moment, WhatCar journos are amongst the worst in the business, imo. They place more emphasis on cupholders and storage bins than core aspects like handling, steering, engine, gearbox etc. Utterly useless. Reading one of their reviews is like wading through a copy of Motorhome Monthly

No offense to anyone, but that's why I liked my previous Z4 so much - interior looked different from any other BMW out there! Much nicer IMHO.

Good thing I am a SciFi nerd and therefore like the new cockpit & tech so much!

You'll have to get a new sticker for your Sport Button that says "WARP DRIVE" so you can refer to your passenger as Number One and scream out "ENGAGE" when you stomp on the throttle.

Actually, I just got my Echo Auto. Haven’t installed it yet, but can’t wait to change the wake word to ‘computer’ and say “computer, fire photon torpedoes” ....

(For those who don’t use Alexa: she then says something like ‘aye captain’ and makes a pewu pewu sound....)
