Great shot in the car.
Love Frenchies. My friend had one and he was the cutest, happiest little dog going. He got hit and killed by a car, I felt terrible as did all of us who knew Willie.

Love Frenchies! I have a 12 year old Boston, a 10 year old American bulldog and a 1 year old Belgian Malinois. My wife and I have been considering a Frenchie in a few years as she really like to have a little dog.

No disrespect to anyone here, but I keep hearing that this breed should not exist as oftentimes the dams cannot give natural birth and furthermore many pups end up suffering from various health issues. Is there any truth to any of it?

Now I know that there are terrible breeders everywhere but the information I came across is focused not on the breeding practices but on the actual breed itself and its physiology.

Again, not hating on the breed. They actually are descendants of the bullenbeisser same as my boxer.

I've got a 6.5 year old Frenchie and it's true. He's had every medical issue that a Frenchie is predisposed to (IVDD/back issues, breathing issues, skin/allergy issues). Doesn't prevent me from loving him, but it is something to consider for those who are interested in getting a Frenchie.

I didn't know Frenchies were prone to IVDD. They are so short though, I wouldn't think it would impact them.

We just went through IVDD surgery for one of our dachshunds, which are definitely prone to it. No fun.

People always mistake my Boston Terrier for a Frenchie.

Yep, my neurologist said that it used to be all dauchshunds coming in, and now with Frenchies becoming the popular breed of the moment, she's seeing all Frenchies. Our little guy had IVDD surgery about 3.5 years ago, and he was able to make a full recovery.

Hope the surgery went well and best of luck to your dachshund and the recovery process!

Surgery was 100% successful. We caught it in time and got her into a great surgeon very quickly. The 4 weeks of strict crate rest following was tough but we all got through it. She's fully healed and hating not being allowed to dive bomb off the bed and sofa anymore.

Our little gremlin...

He's ~9.5 years old. Since he was the runt of the litter, he's definitely had his fair share of health issues (collapsed trachea, skin allergies, gastrointestinal sensitivities, etc.) but he literally is the best dog on the planet which more than makes up for his foibles.

In January of this year, he had a bad reaction to a very severe double ear infection which led to meningitis. For about a week he was in ICU where they ran MRI, spinal tap, etc. Long story short he's pretty much 100% recovered now, which is crazy because our neurologist has rarely seen dogs bounce back from such severe health issues. Truly a miracle pup.

Given the above, I highly suggest pet insurance, especially if it's offered through a work program, etc.
