Two die in Tesla crash in Texas with nobody behind the wheel

https://www.autoblog.com/2021/04/18/...la-driverless/

"Two men died after a Tesla vehicle, which was believed to be operating without anyone in the driver's seat, crashed into a tree on Saturday night north of Houston, authorities said."

This incident was indeed "driverless". No one was in the driver's seat. There was someone in the passenger seat and rear seat. What were they thinking?

I just do not understand the preoccupation the desire by manufacture and consumer with hands free navigation.

I agree but also cannot fathom how regulators allow it given it CLEARLY is not ready and someone needs to be "driving" the car anyways.

Why? Like why is this even a thing?

People are being people, taking things too far. This wasn't a Tesla error, it was a human error.

I hate the fact that fully automated car software is in that bad-haircut stage, but it's just something that has to be gone through.

A simple tweek, such as a sensor in the drivers seat like front passenger airbags would at least force people to sit behind the wheel.

I for one have zero interest in ever owing anything like this, I think we are becoming way to dependant on technology and losing our common sense because of it.

Yeah, like a simple tweak could be made to your phone (that already has a built in gimbal) to know when you're driving and won't allow you to text. Yet you don't see that...

It takes away people's freedom (and oh how I wish they would take that freedom away).

I have a lot of interest in self-driving cars because people in general just suck at driving. I actually can't wait for it, even for myself on the Interestate.

Meanwhile.........975 other MAN DRIVEN car wrecks happened within 100 miles of this event, but no no-one cares because it was not about some idiot that got out of the drivers seat in a car not equipped with "Full Self Driving" capabilities.

So if self driving cars (in the future - because they are NOT self driving cars now) kill 1/2 as many people as human driven cars - is it still "not ready" because a single person dies?

How many is acceptable? 50,000 die each year now with us idiots behind the wheel - so wouldn't 20,000 be better? Nothing is perfect.

I just wonder how many we as humans will be willing to accept as "normal" when the car is driving.

So the phone thing I can see, if you are a passenger in anything moving then you wouldn't be able to use it.

With respect to self driving cars being a thing, I don't think I will see them on the road in any real way in my driving lifetime. Way too many variables to overcome.

When you have to drive 6 hours on a straight hwy with nothing else to do... It is boring as heck.
I wouldn't mind being in a train of cars all going at the same speed and do something else. No passing, no nothing, drive straight at the same speed, like a train.
For city driving and my daily commute, I love driving myself.

"The 2019 Tesla Model S was traveling at a high rate of speed, when it failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway"
The problem isn't driveless per say but the car that is allowed to drive above the speed limit when driverless (and no one at the wheel).
Solution could be that the software is locked at the speed limit when driverless is engage.

So a few things, what about every other driver on the road, and then like the folks that died in this crash, it will only take about 5 minutes for someone to abuse, misuse of just do something stupid. I know Tesla can do what you are explaining but I'd rather just listen to the radio, both hands on the wheel and drive.

driverless doesn't work and won't work in 1000 years, pretty simple one accident we blame tech.
I am 100% behind drive assisted, that's the way to go, sad but true we still need to blame a human.

I think the discussion could be is Tesla creating a danger significantly different that had been accepted in 100 years of automobile travel. We can enforces drugged driving, excessive speed and vehicle mechanical safety as well as poorly designed roads. On the other hand can software / computer hardware associated with non-human interaction be held to the same standards (safety) and enforcement as with human drivers, and is that an advancement we want to accept.

It does work, under certain conditions, and I assure you that it won't take 1000 years for computers/cameras to make better judgements than humans. In fact, they already do, the tech just isn't available to everyone at the moment.

Even on my '18 IS350 the adaptive cruise made better decisions than the truck drivers, you know, the ones that drive for a living?

Automated vehicles are the [very near] future, embrace them, or be left behind.

It's a good idea for sure, but peoples determination to do reckless/dumb things is impressive and anything simple would probably be circumvented quickly. hell, I recall people using oranges to bypass the sensor that checks if your hand is on the wheel. Definitely agree something needs to be done but it's a tricky issue imo

when I see people boarding into a plane without anyone sitting in the cockpit, maybe I will consider this autonomous car thing! lol

The thing is, planes do have autopilot. They've had it for decades, but the pilot still isn't supposed leave it unattended or just fuck off out of the cockpit. It's not a direct translation with the use in Teslas, but the basic concept is still the same.

Unfortunate for the families who have to deal with the repercussions. Idiotic of the "passengers" yes, but nevertheless tragic.
