Way overpriced considering how the Boxster is priced. The original Z4 started at like $45k tops didn't it?

Yikes, not even a full blown M car. That is about M3 msrp and $5k more than a M2 Competition. Guessing the next gen M3/M4/M2 will get a significant price increase.
The Z4 M40i price is basically BMW saying this is the top range Z4. It leaves no room for a full blown M version, it would have to start near $80k. |

Not unexpected given that the last generation 35is model started at $66,350 in its final model year (MY2016).
But yes, this isn't going to help spark sales in a segment that is shedding buyers in droves. |

The price point is necessary to show confidence in the new model's ability to compete in its segment, rather than merely being the 'value' leader. It's right in the ballpark with Porsche, Jaguar, etc., yet with better-priced option packages.
If the performance stats/experience can deliver (which is the point, anyway), then BMW's pricing logic will be proven strategically sensible.

Z4 sticker shock. Worth more than a M2 Comp?
Word has been leaking out today about the price of the Z4 M40i
https://www.autoblog.com/2018/12/11/...mw-z4-pricing/ and while I can see it costing a bit more than say a M240i (a better looking car, in my biased humble opinion) I can't see paying $5K more for it than a M2 Comp. Wasn't that one of the selling points of the old Z4 and before that the Z3, a (relatively, for BMW) not TOO expensive fun roadster? If you are gonna put it in Boxster price range, it better be a better handling car. And from all reports, while it's good, it isn't AS good as a Boxster. |

Guys, this car starts at 6000 less than a starter Boxter S, with less power and with a 4 cylinder that sounds like crap.
Not to mention the stratospheric prices of options in the Porsche.... This car doesn't even need to perform as well on a track, if it's close it's good enough. It has always been close. It fails in that it doesn't offer a manual, as the Porsche does. But price-wise, they're not even competing in the same category. Pick another contender. Again: if this vehicle performs close to the Boxter S on track (we know it's quicker in a straight line), it's a winner (for auto lovers). |

And that's the problem. Enthusiast will take into account that there is no manual and flock towards the Porsche(even the base model). Normal consumers looking for a fun roadster will be thrown off by the price. Z4/Z3 sales have never been that great to begin with, but no manual and a price tag so close to the Porsche will definitely not help sales. |

ALL reasons that make me uncomfortable when I start looking at BMWs that are actually similarly priced, as opposed to a FANTASTIC VALUE. Quote:
if I prefer a roof (which I do).. Porsche HAS that option at $56,900 for 718 Cayman and $69,300 for 718 Cayman S.. whereas BMW doesn't. Of course Porsche options are crazy... but it sure seems like the the most compelling option with respect to a 2020 Z4 is striking one's best deal on a leftover 2019 Porsche on the lot. according to the cpi inflation calculator:
2006 z4 m roadster: $56,270= 2018 $70,515 2018 z4 m40i: $64,695 i think this is the closest comparison possible and at least this car comes with a few good standard options that weren't available back in 2006. just for fun comparison take it for what it's worth. |

I still can't believe CarPlay is a subscription model in BMW's.

This guarantees that Toyota will sell their version the Supra at least two time more. The Z4 was never a big seller anyway so to be honest Toyota was going to sell more even if the price was $10k cheaper. The thing is no one here has driven it so you can't really say it's too expensive. What if it drives better, and feels better than the Porsche Boxster.
