“Classic” project car ideas/inspirations?

I’m tossing ideas around for a project car, and recently thought why not do something a little older, something that has already aged and can be enjoyed for what it is or what I want it to be, with some modernization and customization. The Guntherwerks 400r being an example, a remake of the 993 with some modernization.

I’m looking for cool ideas that perhaps any of you have come across....but some cars that have caught my attention are the tasteful wide body Porsche 993s, a Ferrari 360 Challenge conversion, and other track inspired cars that focus on driver experience and of course look cool. I’m looking for ideas with the base car being $60k or less, so any inspiration is much appreciated!

How much are/were the guntherwerks 400r?

Like Leno said, air cooled Porsche's are great since u don't need to address coolant related engine rust.

I'd always wanted to build a Caterham, a little skeptical about their distribution and sales in U.S., but like them.

There a nice handful of clones you can get in the US.

Edit

For me it would be old and Italian. 348 or 355 maybe a 308 junker. 911s are cool but the prices are getting scary.
