I've been thinking...

If my Z4 M40i is so good regarding performance and price, why not think about the highest performance model, the M8 Competition cabriolet.

In my perusal of cars for sale, it was readily apparent that the depeciation of a new M8 car is so severe it becomes more than a diffucult choice. For example, you can get a 2023 with relatively low miles for $105k. That is a big haircut.

So, maybe a best priced used M8 Comp Conv is the way to go. Or should I stay with the Z4 and be happy.

p.s. another 100 hp on the Z would convice me...

Totally different cars in my opinion.

If you want a luxury, brute, fast statement car - get the M8. It's a great car.

If Z4 is more about being small, light, connected to the driver, wind in your hair type personal experience.

IMO.

How low will an M8 depreciate? They seem to drop thousands of dollars per month. Crazy loss of value.

CarGurus.com shows this 2020 M8 Comp convertible for $77002. If you can handle more miles on it, there are a few for about $70k.

When I did the BMW Track days at the Indianapolis Motor speedway, one of the events was doing drag races, and one of the cars was an M8 vert. They are bonkers quick off the line and IMO up there with the Z4 as BMW’s best looking car.

But, they are big. Like really big, especially compared to the Z4. If you prefer driving twisty roads or such, I’d stick with the Z4. If you want a super quick, comfortable cruiser, I think it’s a great car and vastly underrated.

I’d almost look at an M4 convertible as the ideal in between for our cars and the M8.

Think this perfectly nails the real struggle/trade off.

Plus, the sound of that V8 is wonderful.

Definitely a good compromise, especially if you need a back seat (which I don't.)

I think the M4 would be a great car but the Z4 and M8 have the best front grills of BMW cars right now and the M4 ….. doesn’t.

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of the front of the M4. I could live with it, but I much prefer the front of the 8 and Z4.

Unless the driver and passenger are short people, that back seat is virtually useless for anything but storage and small children and even small children won't likely be comfortable.

Almost as bad as a Mini Cooper convertible that is only good for packages.

Yeah but it’s usable in a pinch unlike the little shelf space in the Z4.

If you really need back seat space, then buy a 4 door car or SUV.

Had a chance to drive a 2022 M8 3400 miles convertible for $101,000. Car is virtually my M4C with a Z4 grill & a V8. Liked the Z4/M8 grill better than my Wild Boar version.

The car itself is a bit quicker than my M4C & 1,000 lbs heavier than my Z4 M40. I was very tempted to make the swap for the M4C. The wife puts up with a lot of my buys but believe a $101,000 used car would have placed me "on the eve of destruction"

The car in my opinion does not play in the same market as the Z4 M40.

The 2 seat roadster is more agile, gets about 10 miles to the gallon better mileage & is a half a ton lighter. If there is anything at $73,000 that might be considered the best bang for the buck its the Z4 over the M8.

NOTE I did copy the M8's grill for my Z4.

My previous two cars were 650 convertibles, an F12 and an F13. I was considering buying a M850, but decided to give the Z4 M40 a try. I find it much more fun to drive and am still happy with my decision. It’s great in the twisty mountain roads and makes all the right noises. I’ve also driven both the M8 comp and the Z4 on the track at the BMW Performance Center and yes, the M8 is a beast, but the Z4 checks all of the boxes I need to keep a smile on my face at half the price.

I looked at used M850i and m6 competition before buying the Z4. The biggest impressions I got from both were:

It's damn fast and lots of fun!
It's really heavy!
There's lots of crap that could break and be expensive to fix.
The back seat is useless.
It's really heavy!

Did I mention I don't like big, heavy cars?

Thankfully, the vast majority of us in this forum don't feel that pinch.

Yeah, was guilty of calling the pig snout a car killer & it would never sell when I saw the "leaked" photo of #1 coming off the assembly line.

Changed my mind after a drive & a chance to see it in real life at a BMW introductory event. Would still prefer a Z4 grill but think the piggy is more of a Wild Boar in the metal. Of course 503BHP advertised & high 400's RWD dyno numbers
don't hurt the view.

As for it never selling I really blew that call. The 4 series out sells the three series by a wide margin in the USA despite it costing more.

BMW 4-Series (36,952 units sold in 2022)
BMW 3-Series (30,400 units sold in 2022)
BMW 4-series (39,430 units sold in 2023-September
BMW 3-Series (23,088 units sold in 2023)-September

Will never be beautiful from the front but many might enjoy the 4 pipes out back.

What this doesn't show is how many of the 4-series are Gran Coupe 4-doors. They sell really well compared to the 3-series sedans. The difference is mostly styling (and rear seat headroom.)

My neighbor has a M440i. It's primarily his car, but they will go out with a couple kids stuffed in the back. When the whole family goes out, they have to take the X7.

It’s down to personal taste I think and for me the grill is something I couldn’t live with. So for me personally, it’s a purchase killer. Which is a shame, I had a 420 deisel coupe for 9 years and in many ways it was an ideal car for what I wanted it for. Eventually sold it with only 39k km on the clock but I had many long trips in that car that I enjoyed and it was also great about town.

The M440 GC has a piggy nose just like the 2 doors & M car two doors. If they are selling well compared to the 3 series due impart to styling it looks like the piggy nose is not an issue.

Will repeat I said there was no way I would buy a piggy in the BMW threads. Sold out when I had access to one for an afternoon. Have no quarrel with anyone who thinks they are ugly as I initially felt that way myself.
