"Real MPG" and how diesels do (Motor Trend)

In the August, 2014 issue MT published an investigation as to how different cars' mpg measured up to the EPA ratings. They used a very sophisticated analysis methodology, but of course I have no idea how accurate it was. Overall, they found that diesel engines underperformed the EPA numbers by 3.4%, which was much higher than any other kind of car. For instance, hybrids came in at only 0.5% over the EPA ratings.

So if a diesel says it gets 50mpg on the sticker, it actually gets 48.3mpg, on average? Holy shit, I'm going to write to my Congressman!

I could see hypermilers being up in arms about something like this but the ordinary consumer has to be pretty dim to expect those types of ratings in real world driving.

Go ask Ford about the Fusion and C-Max hybrids...

Yup. Basically the EPA said it was ok that if you had the engine rated in one platform, you could just apply it to another.

So if I remember correctly, Ford had to give owners some cash back because the Fusion Hybrid wasn't making its EPA-rated 47 MPG average. It was making more like 42 MPG. OMG
