'09 CTS-V

Saw a CTS-V entering the highway last night. Black with dark windows and temp tags. Pulled up along side of me and before I even had a chance to look over it rocketed off like it was shot out of a sling-shot. The acceleration was astounding...

The '09 CTS-V is supposedly built as the answer to the M5 and I would say it answered it and then some

Alright, I think someone's just going out of his way to look down his nose at an American-made vehicle. If a new M5 came out with those specs, you'd be singing a different tune.

That car posted an amazing Nurburgring lap time with an automatic transmission...the car was simply driven in "D." I don't care who you are, that's fucking impressive.

Perhaps you don't like the car's styling, perhaps you might like the way an M5 drives compared to a CTS-V. But to write it off as an inferior vehicle to an M5 is simply being a BMW fanboy.

Can you say also cheaper! I'm just hoping I can convince the family to get one. Also wondering if they won't make the LS9 an option for it later. Then it would be in the likes of a Dinan M5, still probably for a lot less.

+2. (And this belongs in the general vehicle section)

Road and Track's experience with the old CTS-V in a long term test (Hopefully things have improved):
Over the course of 50,000 miles few things failed, but those that did, did repeatedly. The front anti-roll bar link un-bolted itself twice, the trunk latch loosened and came out of alignment once, and the paint on our navigation system’s buttons started flaking off after about 4000 miles. The navigation buttons are a strange situation. They function fine, but the black paint flakes off leaving a garish white button on an otherwise black center stack. We pointed it out to the dealer, and to our surprise they replaced the entire GPS unit. Shortly after that the paint started flaking off the new buttons.

The only other problem with the CTS-V is the rear end; our dealer had to service it repeatedly. Near the 30,000-mile mark the limited- slip differential began binding. On cold starts, backing out of a parking spot would feel as if the rear end had a spool in it. The inside rear tire would chirp. Service claimed nothing was damaged and everything was in spec. We drove it for another 6000 miles or so waiting to see if something would break; nothing did. However, the rear end developed a strange whine that was particularly unnerving for rear passengers. Another service resulted in new rear suspension bushings and a torn differential bushing that needed to be replaced.

I'd like the think the M5 isn't as problematic...but anyways who am I kidding...I love the new CTS-V!

I read you need to opt for the Recaro seats. The standard seat does not hold you in place as well.

It's not all about horsepower. The CTS-V makes the M5 look like a Civic in terms of torque.

I think the last tree you want to bark up is the domestic vs. BMW horsepower war. I think it's called the Viper Coupe... and it is a V10 as well as the M5 except it makes 600 crank HP 100% of the time, none of this 400hp THEN 500hp bs. It also makes almost 200 more ft/lbs of torque and you don't have to wind the hell out of it to get it.

Viper Coupe (V10)

600hp @ 6,100 rpm /560tq @ 5000 rpm

M5 (V10)

500hp @ 7,750 rpm /383tq @ 6,100 rpm

Viper has 100 more hp and 177 more ft lbs or torque... would you like to compare truck engines, suv engines too? or the two handfuls of cars that outpower BMWs since well, forever. Sure the interiors are crap but you can't dog a domestic motor, especially considering I've seen cammed full bolt on and even S/C LSX motors with 150,000 miles on them and they only need oil changes, nothing like 2 VANOS failures in 150,000 miles... that's what $8,000 bucks worth of work between the two?

The new CTS-V sure is impressive performance wise and somewhat lookswise. The coupe will be alot sleeker IMO.

But that ring time with automatic in D is ASTONISHING! Holy cow you americans have learned how to master that track!

Considering the price I'd probably buy this before the other ?ber sedans in this segment! And it's got the six speed in europe unlike our euro M5 which kinda sucks...

Caddy went to great pains to fix the stuff that was "broken" on the old CTS-V; they particularly went after the rear diff bugs. Say what you want about Caddy or GM in general but the new V is a serious effort.

Which BMW are you referring too? And how much torque is that engine making? And the range of which is useful?

The ignorance is strong in you.

Lol thats a bad comparison man. The viper has a 8.4L V10 while the M5 has a 5.0L V10. Do not try to compare american engines to German or Italian engines. The europeans are ages ahead of the americans when it comes to that. Lets see an American car company squeeze out 500 hp from 5 liters without forced induction. The Z06 has a 7.0L engine that makes 500 hp. Don't get me wrong I love the power these engines make, but the way they make it matters a lot too. German Engineering <3
