I'm trying to decide between Michelin Sport 4s and the Michelin Sport all season?
I can get the all season balanced and installed for $282 per tire and was told they wear better than the 4s?
I don’t go to track, so was thinking the all season would be better. |

He’s probably better off having two separate sets (summer/winter), especially with RWD. The all seasons I had on my M340 weren’t great in the winter, and I had xDrive.

That being said, I wouldn't drive the Z4 in the snow unless it was absolutely necessary. |

Snow tires 1000x better than all seasons so if you gonna have two sets of rims go that way.

As just mentioned in a separate thread, my next set will likely be the Conti DWS06 because they have performance comparable to the AS4 and are quieter at speed. YMMV |

Thanks for all the replies. I don’t plan on driving the car in the winter. Just Spring to Fall. I was looking at the all season because they’re cheaper and don’t wear as bad. I like the Conti DWS 06 idea as well.

If no snow driving the summer tires, PS4S, are the best for the car. They wear faster because they are made of a traction compound as opposed to a high mileage compound.
Mine lasted 19,000 miles or 31 months.

I believe most of the discussions regarding Ultra High Performance All-Season tires are done so with an understanding that it's a small compromise of performance for the sake of other things such as mileage, road noise, etc. I'm betting, and willing to be proven wrong, that I can get another 5-10K of mileage and less high speed road noise with the DWS06. Because my driving style is such that I never fully take advantage of the SS's performance capabilities, the small loss of performance won't likely be noticed. The performance capability of Ultra High Performance All-Season tires has dramatically improved over the past 10 years, so much so that most (not all) drivers likely wouldn't notice in a blind test. However, natural tendencies of our ilk is to demand the absolute best performance, needed or not. I was guilty of that most of my adult life, not sure what's got into me lately. |

To me the car is designed for higher performance then a say M440. At speed, 85MPH & up, a performance tire will turn sharper & stop quicker than an all weather tire.
I just think its a safer interstate tire where something can suddenly happen when you are rolling fast. Also its a bonus in that it gets 10,000 miles more than my sports cars tires. One thing I noticed at the BMW driving school how little most of the people actually used their tires. The hard stop & brake while turning before the cone barrier was a real eye opener. Most had a hard time getting the car stopped & turning at the same time. Me, I never made the turn was always stopped before the turn was required, got a thumbs up from the instructor. At the upper speeds it took a significant push on the pedal to get the car stopped. The others would not put their foot hard enough into the braking and were all over the place including into the cones. For those who have not done a delivery this evolution is a series of increasing speeds toward a string of cones across the road with a "safe" outlet to the left. There is a start braking point after you get up to speed. You launched made the speed braked & made the turn if necessary. IIRC the runs were from about 35MPH to 60/65MPH. It was a crash avoidance exercise.

I've never done the BMW Driving School so can't speak to that but a decade ago I was invited by Cadillac to take their new CTS-V out on the track. What a hoot! I was amazed at how composed such a heavy vehicle could be on the track. I was a bit timid on top speed out of the turns but I nailed every one of the turns. Braking was amazing on these CTS-Vs but they limited me to 130MPH on the track despite those beautiful banks at Fontana . My takeaway was that I'd gladly take someone else's car out on the track and beat it to death but not my own. Perhaps a character flaw but there you have it. |

We worked the cars very hard at the regular school had a change of front tires at lunch on the second day. Interesting note: They run Continental summer tires at Greer SC. Ill do some AutoX with the Z4/Cobra & Charity Laps at VIR in any car I own. Not exactly beating the cars up. Stopped any kind of serious running back in the late 1990's. Will get the M4C 1/4 mile timed this summer at a test & tune night. Have no expectations of doing any real competition running with it. Its also to big for a Big Box AutoX.

I prefer the 4s (had on my M4 cab) to the AS which I have on my Z4. I don't drive much in th erain, but the AS are noisy.

If my car was a daily driver most/all season, and couldn’t have 2 sets of tires/wheels, I’d probably go with the continentals as mentioned. Have heard from people who have driven a good few miles on them and have been impressed.
Regarding performance driving, this car has more performance than me. The best thing is to look (far ahead) where you want to go around a corner, and the car will do it. That’s me as less-tha-a-novice having done only a couple of performance driving schools (I’m good, but not good enough to say I’m good at it ).

As far as daily driving handling, there's no difference and you'll get more mileage out of it, and it's cheaper. |
