When I was at Pfizer Global there was a guy who would always destroy the ex-men's facility after lunch every day. It was like clockwork. There were several times many of us conspired to lock that bastard in the head and let him die the miserable death he deserved. The stench of his spoor literally ate through everything and would assault noses for dozens of yards. He had to be dead inside.

Negative on a 1984 pandemic, he was referring to Orwell's novel. I may not be a true American. Honestly, I try not to be labeled as anything as this directly ties me to a specific group, which I hate. I think none of them are 100% accurate with their beliefs; however, I do feel like bits and pieces of each are spot on. This goes with politics, religion, etc. I take small bits of everything I learn and direct it toward daily life where it fits. Aside from that, I take no true allegiance with any particular sect.

The virus can enter your body through mucus membranes like the inside of your nose or mouth, also your eyes and the most common method of infection is putting your fingers in your mouth or rubbing your eyes. I think the whole "wear a mask" at work has as much to do with corporate liability as it does to prevent he spread of the disease. FTR I'm not trying to diminish the impact this virus has had on folks.

I work in the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) business. I'm 40hr worker and 8hr supervisor OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and 1st Aid/CPR trained. I do refreshers every year for this. I manage projects where I have to evaluate the usage of the appropriate PPE for my staff, subcontractors, and consider exposure risk to the general public. We are trained to understand how to use PPE and it's effectiveness.

Based on my training, I lean more towards the WHO recommendations regarding masks in this situation. I think they should be reserved for medical personnel and those in similar jobs/situations. Medical masks, and especially these cloth masks, are a bad idea for the general public in most all cases regarding COVID-19. For one, there have been plenty of studies done prior to COVID-19 showing that medical masks in medical settings are minimally effective in reducing respiratory disease transmission and some say that they are completely ineffective. You need a need full seal on the mask if you want true protection from highly transmissible respiratory diseases like COVID-19. N95 masks offer a 95% protection factor at best and are usually well below that because they don't seal well against many faces or those with facial hair. A half face or full face respirator (those with filtering cartridges) is the only option for 100% protection and that's only assuming you've been fitted for the respirator, you're using the correct cartridge, AND you have no facial hair.

A disposable medical mask's intent is to keep large droplets from transferring between parties and is a bodily fluid drip/spill/spurt blocker during surgery and the like. It is ineffective at controlling aerosol materials as there are so many outlets on the mask and the aerosol is easily transferred in and out.

Multi-use cloth masks are no more effective and are likely worse because they are used multiple times, washed, and reused by non-trained people. The exposure risk while cleaning goes up significantly.

Then there's the question of usage and training. This is my biggest argument. Medical personnel know how to wear and handle masks. They are trained. The general public does not and that is the biggest risk, IMO. I've watched masked shoppers and workers in public. They are constantly fiddling with the masks. They are pulling them on and off to talk, sometimes their nose is exposed, they barely fit, they have air holes/valves, etc. Because they lack the training, they are touching their facial areas WAY MORE than they would have otherwise. Don't get me started about people wearing disposable gloves public. The masks also create an issue where people can't hear each other speak, so they get within a couple feet of each other and then pull the masks down to talk. LOL.

Many people in populated areas of Asia wear masks as customary when they think they are sick and don't want their cough or sneeze droplets to escape. That's great practice and should be done everywhere regardless of COVID-19. Better yet, stay home when you're sick when you're sick. If you must go out when sick, wear a mask. Simple as that.

Our governments are flying blind here and throwing everything at the wall to see if it sticks, science or not. I have seen no evidence showing that medical and/or cloth masks can effectively stop the spread of COVID-19. It's all speculation at this point. I hear so many times, well, it's better than nothing. I would agree if we were only talking about medical professionals wearing masks. The general population though? Nope. IMO, the exposure risk is being increased. See above.

I feel that these mask recommendations from the CDC, health depts, and "experts" are primarily driven by potential litigation and financial risk management and not founded in real science. It's a great fall back to say "Oh you got COVID. Did you wear a mask? No? Oh, well you should have listened to us. You can't sue us because you didn't follow our recommendations. Move along."

When the WHO changes their mask recommendation or there is scientific data that proves masks are effective, I'm all in. For now, I'll wear a mask where it's required, but otherwise, I'm not doing it. You can give me the stink all you want.

It will be at that moment you will realize how important following PPE guidelines, set forth by the company, truly are; as you being escorted out of the building. Ask your cousin/attorney if wrongful termination cases stick due to employee insubordination over PPE policies." Strangely enough, it was a short conversation.
My wife is in a senior leadership roll in government, she previously held senior leadership rolls with a number of fortune 500 companies. She now has to deal with the union's constantly. When they send government workers back the union has been demanding PPE and training to use it. I've had to use PPE lots of times in the past for work and know that it can be a pain in the ass. I've warned her that she's going to get push back from folks that don't think they have to wear it, who will wear it wrong and who will complaint about it being uncomfortable, claustrophobic and make it difficult to breath and won't wear it for those reasons.

Her plan is to send them home on a holiday day if that's their choice. Government is a nightmare, especially when you have unionized office workers complaining constantly about horrible work conditions.

I couldn't imagine dealing with what she does. I'm not a member of management here. I just happen to be the guy that works in the office, makes shit happen and the only one in the office that doesn't speak out both sides of my face. They tend to come to me more with complaints or issues because they know I won't bullshit them, I'll call them out on their bullshit and explain to them why it is or isn't a good idea to go to their supervisor with the "issues" they have. I used to be in their position so I respect them for what they do rather than look down on them.

While I feel it is misguided and isn't founded in proven science, it is the employer's and business' choice to do that. If the face mask is a recommendation, I'm likely not going to do it.

I'm tired of hearing government leaders, news casters, and so-called experts etc. preach to me that masks absolutely work.
If you're going to tell me I must do something, then you're going to need to show me the data to justify your position. The CDC has totally dropped the ball, they're largely clueless (somewhat thanks to the Trump administration), and also in bed with industry (same goes for FDA). I cautiously pay attention to their recommendations. I trust the WHO way more than the CDC as they are a group of global medical professionals with far less affected by lobbying and political "input".

I am not conspiracy theorist or anti-government type of person, but how easily people are going along with this mask thing and not asking questions and worse, becoming very ok with potential government tracking measures, is a bit disturbing. As I tell my clients: Trust, but verify.
