Thought exercise: US map “Hunger Games”-style districts

Using the map below, tell why your “Hunger Games” district would win.

Consider natural resources, human capital, farming, manufacturing, and anything else you can think of *except politics*. Assume no organized military. It's just the people and what they can bring to bear.

I'm in District 3. Oil, Farmland, Gunz, Huge population. Ranches.

Also 3: Adding wheat, cotton, corn, soybeans, beef, milk, hogs, chickens, fish and shellfish. Major ports, river, rail and road transportation along with international, regional and local airports. Hub for FedEx and UPS. So we got logistics covered.
Diverse populating in 3, from PhD out of very good universities to no college and maybe not full HS. Hispanic, black, island (esp Cuban and Puerto Rican), Native American, and whitey. Not sure about Asian representation. Labor and technical workforces.
Oil, natural gas, coal (Illinois basin for steam; central App for met). Timber. For rock we have limestone, shale and granite. Unsure of ore (iron would be nice).
Temperate climate for the most part, some extreme heat in parts of the region, of course.
Thoroughbred horses, not really worth anything useful except breeding, racing and selling to the other regions.
And Bourbon and whiskey!

While I don’t live in 3, honestly, you guys all raise good points and I find myself having a hard time basing a good argument free of confirmatory bias. All jokes aside and genuine question based on this conversation and the carryover from another thread...

Why is it then that district three isn’t more successful OVERALL. I am not taking away from the points, more raising the question why the population still resides more in Chicago, LA and NYC. Why California has an economy to rival some of the worlds nations and yet, has little natural resources compared to that which you’ve listed....

A couple of questions from one of the few non Americans amongst us:

- Why does District 3 have quite a few more states than the other Districts? Is it because it’s primarily the South and they can only use single fire weapons due to their “closeness” to their relatives?
- What happens to Alaska, do they just fight with the Snow Mexicans in Series 2?
- What about Hawaii?

Is this a joke? MAYBE if 1 and 2 joined forces.... 4 and 5 can just ask Canada if they can move over there.

5 does have a lot of spies here though.

District 1.
  • Massive oil and natural gas reserves
  • Fuckton of gun owners - CA alone outsold TX, let alone throwing AZ, CA, UT, NV, NM into the mix.
  • Tons of farmland including both veggies and cattle / pigs / goats / etc
  • $$$$$$$$ - we can buy whatever from the other districts
  • Veteran population
  • "Brain drain" from other states - tons of engineers, finance, entrepreneurs, etc here
  • Climate - can produce / ship / build / etc year round without much difficulty
  • Geography - mountains provide a natural line of defense to the east, ocean to the west
  • Geography part 2 - ocean access + shipping internationally = support line alternatives from foreign countries if need be
  • Fewer states than any district other than district 2 = fewer chefs in the kitchen, easier to come to consensus and quicker to act as a group

There's my initial thoughts.

Dude!

You are asking complex and multifactorial sociological questions. WTF?!?!!

I'm just trying to have a little fun here. If I want that, I can go 3 miles away and talk to my parents. That is, after I turn C-SPAN down...

Alaska and Hawaii are our new Penal colonies. Guess where I got the idea.

We do have more states but our overall population in District 3 (also know as The Victors) is about the same.

District 1 can be taken out with a few strategic dams cutting off their water supply. Heck, one nameless state in particular can't even keep their power grid online!

Districts 1 and 2 are vulnerable to starvation if their granola supply is disrupted.

Being a resident of District 5, I can say with authority that most of the population would starve to death if Door Dash, Uber Eats, GrubHub, etc stopped delivering.

District 3 is populated by well-armed citizens who already eat pond rat and roadkill. I'd put my money on them.....

Guess you haven't driven by the stock yards in CA.

District 2 has the disadvantage of a pretty low population. All of 2 has a smaller population than CA or TX alone.

I say district 5. All that industry can make tanks and airplanes at an alarming rate, for MI as well as many other Militias. Also skilled workforce, and high population density. But trade agreements with 1-4 will be needed to secure enough food, oil, cowboy hats and gator skins.

Strategic ambition for 5 would be to expand into Illinois and Wisconsin to safeguard all of Great Lakes fresh water supply and cheese. Also to expand south to Kentucky to secure and control the HQ of KFC, as well as bourbon distilleries.

Guess this exercise shows the strength in United vs divided districts.

I want nothing to do with the NE US, we have enough of that up here. So since Canada doesn't get a zone I'll just throw a few things into the pie.

Natural resources out the wazzo, farming, beef, pork, poultry, wheat, veg. and fruit. Did I mention fresh water, because you need that. We have guns, but don't tell anyone and lots of room to hide. We make some decent whisk(e)y and our beer is pretty good too. It can get fuckin cold though.
OH, and our national animal is a beaver.

Going with District 5. We have a ton of people, especially in Texas. We'll give up Austin to CA, the population here is full of transplants from there, so might as well let them go. We'll also recall the workforce from the other districts and y'all will be screwed. Your economy will shut down, restaurants, agriculture, construction will lose all the workers. Not worried about Dist 2, they hardly have any people.
