I guess it depends on (a) how bad your winters are (b) what they put on your roads and (c) your budget.
I can only afford one car at a time and I don't think UK winters justify changing the tyres. You're supposed to use winters below 7C apparently. So if it's -2C when I go out in the morning and 10C when I drive home in the afternoon (fairly typical for UK winter), am I supposed to change the tyres twice a day? I just stick with summers, slow down and keep my distance. So far, fingers crossed, I haven't had any problems with corrosion etc in over 30 years of driving. I appreciate the north American climate can be a bit more extreme. |

I would want to be a wee bit careful driving at temps between -2C and +7C. In that range, the rubber in your tyres can be stiff and not offer much adhesion to the road surface. Below +3C, you can get ice forming. Its also possible to get localized "black ice" in spots that are shaded from the early morning sun, so do be particularly careful in the morning. You could look at using what we in North America refer to as an "all-season tyre" during UK winters. They are a compromise between a full winter tyre and a full summer tyre - may be ideal for you in winter. Enjoy the car!

Our roads do get salted when a freeze is expected, but probably not heavily enough or often enough to cause corrosion. I guess if you've got loads down for weeks or months at a time that's going to be a different story. |

Z4 winter tires
BMW offers a winter tire package with 4 Blizzak winter tires with 17 inch rims, mounted and balanced for a little less than $2000 that fit on my 2019 Z4 30

Thanks for the info. I went for a set of Continental Winter Contacts in the same size as my summers so I just get them swapped over twice a year and keep my nice 19" rims on all the time.

[QUOTE=mstevens;25324005]Malarkey. I drove Z4's year-round in New Hampshire for years and my M40i should be delivered in December. They do fine as long as the roads are plowed, which is basically always here. When the state plow leaves a berm at the end of the driveway I either have to get out and dig or steal my wife's X3, but that's it.
Hi, I'm in NH too. Where did you end up ordering your Z4 from? I also ordered a Z4 - hope to get it in Jan. |

Question: Do most of you opt for a second set of rims for your winter tire swap? It would seem like the rims and tires would take a beating removing and remounting tires every 6 months?

Thank you, any issues with having to rebalance, (moving of the wheel weights) at each change?

I purchased 17" winter wheel and tire package from BMW for my M40 and couldn't be happier, I wanted narrower wheels and tires for better winter performance since it's my DD they were a bit pricy at $1,950 but came with TPMS and run-flats, the ride isn't too much harder than the 19" and tire rack didn't have 17" wheels that would fit and 18" package would have only saved me about $100-200 and I prefer BMW wheels. I also figure going forward the smaller tires in non-runflat will be much less expensive.

And like others have said, I also get a different (less expensive) size for my winter setup. Once you take all that into account, you may find that having dedicated wheels isn't all that much more (depending on the wheels you get of course). |

I always bought my own rims and all seasons on my previous z4s. But i don't think its necessary. I don't drive in the snow, but do drive every day. Just be careful in cold temps and you'll be fine.
