Is markup over MSRP still a thing?

Trying to order a Z4 today.

Every dealer was making up their emailed bid from 1 to 4K over MSRP.

I've passed on M cars before due to the insulting 10K markup and god forbid you try to buy a 911 (was just in a dealer who had a turbo S on the floor with a 100,000 markup!!).

Is everyone just paying over MSRP or do I need to widen my search?

(my planned build: EXQQ7ZZW)

I paid MSRP for my Z4 (just took delivery 2 weeks ago). I did not push or fight for anything less, but they also did not mark it up at all. I am not sure of other dealers and what they are doing currently. I would be happy to share the details of my dealer and sales person if you are interested. It is a long distance form you (I am in west Texas), but i am sure they could have it delivered to you. Let me know if you are interested.

It's pretty common to get Z4s at MSRP. I did so back in August without any haggling on a Z4 that had just finished production and was at the port. Back then, many dealers were marking up Z4s on their lot because of warm weather and low inventory but even then it was easy to order one for MSRP or purchase one in production that wasn't spoken for.

At this time, going into the winter, I wouldn't be surprised if discounts could be had on '22 model Z4s on the lot.

My ‘23 is coming at msrp. I’m used to buying at a discount but realized msrp is as good as I can do. I did get $2k from BMW for being a Vet.

Any dealer up North with 2022 inventory should offer you MSRP or a little lower.

When you say ‘every dealer’, do you mean within a certain radius? It’s likely that they are - while not necessarily conspiring - just using each other as a reference point for price. I’m sure Z4s are not the current go-to car in winter.

I’d extend your search outside your immediate area, do a quick call to someone in a different location. Ordering from out of state is unlikely to get you a discount, but shouldn’t pay more than MSRP.

Spoke to several dealers in the Northeast recently. All at MSRP for a 2023 Z4 build. Didn't really push hard for a discount, as all said there were no discounts on the rare model, and I want to order my own specs.

As others have said, you could get a discount on the 2022 models in stock; especially during the winter.

What is the status of your car? When did you get an allocation? Thanks

Leith BMW in Raleigh NC has held at MSRP the past few years, might give them a try.

My 2020 Z4 M40i was 16% off MSRP in Feb 2020 with various incentives & unused mile rebate from my 2018 440. The 2022 M4C in June 2021 was at MSRP.

I got my allocation pretty quick actually around mid November. The car is somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic right now. Should have it in 3-4 weeks hopefully

BMW of Ft. Lauderdale has also been correct and not gone over MSRP. If interested I can give you the contact information for my salesman.

I got a dealer to sell at msrp. I feel like a sucker never paid full sticker. Oh well at least I didn’t pay over. These times are hard for car enthusiasts on a budget

I’m south of Tampa - ended up purchasing from dealer close by. One dealer was doing the $2500 of dealer options including tint and special fabric protection warranty and free car washes for a year. Dude, part of why I’ve bought BMW before was to have a nice dealer experience, not this Toyota bull&SHT. Prior to this car I’ve sat down, ordered a car and had it delivered in Germany every time, good deals and no hassle. This time around it was a completely different experience. I miss my dealer up north.

VERY bummed that European delivery was canceled as well. Something special about picking the car up in Germany.

Car was listed 74,420 (every option ticked, MSRP plus the delivery fee per BMW)

"taxable fees" 205.50
"Dealer service fee" 999
"non tax fees". 528.15

This was the best I could do without really trying to haggle. I've not been pleased with this buying experience vs. my last BMW but it is what it is. Maybe I still paid too much, but at least I didn't get stuck with $2500 of dealer added options which was basically a fabric treatment and free car washes. IDK. Best of luck to you.

I have always had a firm rule when shopping for a car, the minute a dealer hits you with his extra BS options I always walk!
