1st generation ford lighting vs 335i?

Anyone know what these are capable of modded? I ran one briefly from roll to about 60 and I was barely pulling on him. His rear tires were enormous and almost looked like slicks and the exhaust didn't sound like it was stock (VERY loud). I was impressed at how much power this old truck had but admittedly don't know much about their potential.

hmm.. those lightnings are extremely quick, i remember a buddy of mine used to have one lightly modded and it would keep up with some suprising compeitors.

depends greatly on the lightning, the early ones were really just a dressed up standard truck, the later ones supercharged


either way, those american small blocks have TONS of aftermarket stuff to make huge power for little $$$$

a lightning with the right mods will show a lot of cars it's tailights, unless you find a corner or 2 to throw in there

Those things push around 380-400HP and 450 lb. of tq. in stock form. The motors are 5.4L V8's so in terms of modding, there are any number of things they could do.

Ya Ford canceled the one planned for the current gen because they are bleeding cash like mad and plus the new F150 weighs a million pounds. Then they were supposed to build one off the new sport track instead but that was scrapped too.

The 1st Gen Lightnings (93-95) don't have nearly that much HP/TQ guys....

They had a N/A 351-Windsor (5.8L) that they claimed put down 240HP and 340TQ (factory ratings) but they actually put out a little more than that. A similar engine is in the 95' Cobra "R" which was rated at 300HP/365TQ.

They ran low 15's in the 1/4-mile stock.....


Now if it's a 2nd Gen then bets are off because they can be modded to run high 11's for very little money....

it was a first gen. modded obviously but those trucks can be made fast. been doing my research since the first post.

Def.....

I know several local 1st-Gen Lightnings that are in the mid-10/low 11's with Turbo's and slicks. You would have to look at his setup. Most guys bore them out to 400+ci and slap some form of FI on it or Nitrous. They are quick and handle very well for a 4,000lb. truck.

Right, but so can the first generations because mods for small block fords are cheap as sh*t and can make mad power even without the power adder from the factory.

Parts aren't as easy to come by on the 351 as the 302. There are still plenty but not as many. It would still take a lot to get a 93-95 Lightning to run with a 99.5-04 Lightning, even more if allowing only $3k in mods on both....

If we keep things on the factory internals then yes I agree (and your 3k number would fall into that, yes). But if you want more power than that, at some point you will have to tear into the block, change displacement, valvetrain etc. And that's where the MOD motor costs will shoot up dramatically.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take the MOD in heartbeat (I've still go pieces from two sitting in my garage from my Mustang days).
