iPhone Shutdown?

My wife was driving up to Flag in her new M40i using Waze on the iPhone. She called me after pulling over saying the “system” shut down. XM radio was still working and the center display reverted to the BMW XM menu.

I told her to shut down, get out, let the car lock, go back restart etc.

When she did, the car greeted her but the iPhone didn’t display. She had to go to Com, select the phone, select car play and then the phone relinked. Then she commented the phone was really hot. Hmmm.

We are brand new to this car. It’s her car, her dream. Not our first Z4 though. We had the previous one, 2012 I think. But would the charger where the phone sits overheat the phone causing it to shut down? She didn’t say it shut down. Also, when one gets into the car, shouldn’t the iPhone just display? Im wondering if we should go the old fashion way and connect with a wire? Has anyone seen this?

While I’m documenting the car, we always get “tires not recognized”and we need to select ok to clear it. There is definitely an alarm thrown. The sales guy said he has to clear the same message every time. Sounds weird to me. The TPMS though does work. We attempted to let the system recognize the tires (there is a menu item for that) but it failed.

I have more questions that I’ll ask soon as I do research. The car isn’t new (2020)but new to us at 9700 miles. It is beautiful and runs well.

Thanks

Saw that you are in AZ. Have had the phone overheat on the charger & shut down during the Summer in NC. Also running WAZE.

I use the phone cable to charge the phone on longer trips now. Works fine.

FWIW The M4C does not have the charger, no chips when it was built, and using the wire works with no issues so far.

Just a side note. WAZE will not show up on the HUD if you have one. Work around is use the BMW built in nav for directions on the HUD. Leave WAZE on without setting a destination. You can bring WAZE up on the center screen for warnings etc with CarPlay

Waze, Apple Music and in-tray wireless charging will overheat your phone in no time. I've had my iPhone XS overheat innumerable times and I've stopped using Waze but still have the problem. At least, by using the BMW navigation system I don't end up losing my directions as I'm driving along. That happened early on and was the main reason I stopped using Waze. So far, the overheating hasn't kept the phone from working once it gets cooled down. Not sure if I'm lessening the life of the phone though. Good luck!

Try using a regular iPhone charging cable connecting to the USB port and turn on Waze and see if you still have this issue. I use Waze all of the time and do not have this issue.

It’s worth pointing out that BMW eventually got rid of the wireless charging pad. It might have been removed for the 2021 models….it’s definitely not available in the 2022 models which is what I have. They never got it to work quite right. If I was you, I wouldn’t bother using the wireless charging pad.

I have a 2022 and using a charging cable I have never had an issue so you are correct.

I get the "tires not recognized" message on occasion. I don't think it's harmful. I have the original tires. Check your tire pressures through iDrive and make sure they're in spec.

Have you been fitting metal aftermarket valve caps on? If so this can affect the TPM signals (so I have read)

the overheating of the iPhone on Qi charger is expected when running navigation, etc. I have this happen to me on my company VW Tiguan I drive daily for work. If I'm listening to Apple Music and using phone for navigation on trips longer than 1 hour it will overheat and generally right when i need the navigation directions, leaving me guessing as to my next move when i need directions most on that trip! lol

I designed and built a custom fit cooling fan to address the overheating problem with my iphone that a number folks on this forum have also used with success. It keeps the iphone cool and plugs into the USB port. Send me a private message if you are interested in more information.

Here it the thread about the cooling fan and the design process:

I’ll have to look into designing a cooling fan for the Tiguan. The Z4 cooling fan has completely resolved the problem for me and the other folks I made them for.
