In looking at the unicorn sightings and the talk about how much of niche car the Z4 is, it got me wondering: What percentage of Z4 G29 owners in the US are member of this forum? I suspect it is quite a few. I don't know how many American G29 members we have, but in looking at the Z4 sales numbers, I see the following:

1121 in 2023 through Oct
1565 in 2022
2367 in 2021
2371 in 2020
2941 in 2019

10,365 BMW Z4 G29s rolling around the US.

Seems like a pretty small community compared to the 290.8M vehicles on the road in the US. We Z4 owners are the .0036 percenters of the car world.

Just seems like not alot of people talk about it. I mean... had I gone to CarMax and bought my first one there... I'd have never found this forum. The only reason that brought me here, was that I was curious about how long it took to build a car. Luckily, it took me here.

Even when I'm on the road and happen to see another G29 driver... it's rare they give a wave or whatever.

For most people it’s just a car. For example, my wife loves her X3, but would never join these forums and post stuff about it.

I agree that the Z4 is kind of a sleeper car as it is a balance between performance and luxury. It’s the right balance for me vs the more spartan but better performing Porsche and the more luxurious and pampering, but less precise, Mercedes.

I just got my Z4. I don’t see many of them around, although I know must be quite a few here in the DC area. There were quite a few for sale but most had had accidents or were overpriced. I did much better by shopping around.

Some theories... Not a lot of G29s out there by comparison, many of which are still under warranty. Less cars, less enthusiasts. If there is a problem call the dealer, opposed to searching for a forum answer or discussion. Perhaps there isn't a need for major public forum discussions, unless something like a class-action situation would happen (E89 timing chains, Porsche IBS).
I suspect the target demographic of owners are not (significantly) modding them (yet) and the M40i is plenty performant for that group.

In my experience it’s a similar situation in the UK - you’re much more likely to see an F-Type than another G29 Z4. Certainly a car with a good exclusivity to $£€ ratio! Apparently in mainland Europe they’re much more common though.

I'd agree with this. The M40i is definitely a nice performer so really doesn't "need" any performance upgrades.

I don't remember what brought me here when I ordered my Z4 but it was probably because I knew it wouldn't remain stock and I wanted to know what was out there to mod. The list is still small and mostly cosmetic, for now.

I find that the forum is great for advice and the benefit of others’ experience. Figuring out which equipment comes with which package was really helpful as I shopped. And when something does go wrong, I feel much better prepared to deal with it.
