Slow launch control M40i?

Picked up a slightly used 2022 M40i with 3800km on it last week. Tried launch control a few times yesterday on a dry straight road with good tarmac and got nowhere near that 4.5 second mark

Fastest I got was 5.5s, measured with an app on my iPhone 14. The car even had 102 RON fuel in it which is around 98-99 in US numbers (AKI).

Is this normal? The launch control holds it at a very low RPM of 2000 and then launches verrrrry softly before putting some real power on. It's faster than my old Golf 7 GTI but not by much.

You did not say what app you used. Is it just the phone or is it a dedicated device like Dragy that uses the phone to report the numbers?

Fair point. It was just the phone, not some external GPS device. I figured it might not be super accurate but not a full second off however.

[EDIT] Apparently the iPhone still only does 1Hz for updates so it is indeed inaccurate as hell for these types of measurements.

That's weird, I haven't used LC in my Z because I truly love her - actually because it's so fast without it, I short shift into second and haven't timed it but must be mid 4's - but in the M3CX before it I used it a dozen times and it worked extremely well. Sometimes the tires were an issue or the tarmac and I'd get high 3's but could easily punch a 3.5s and once a 3.1s launch. I used the M analyzer from BMW to get the times.

I've gotten as good as 3.5 but I'm in the US which the US version has 50 more HP than the European version, or at least it used to. I've only gotten the 3.5 number when the outside temps were close to 100 deg F and the tires and road were very sticky. Launching very softly sounds like LC is not engaging. Do you get the "launch control" light on the instrument cluster?

Yeah it's got "only" 340 HP, should go 4,5 seconds to 100 km/h.

And yes, LC was engaged otherwise the rear wheels would be spinning :-) It also said so on the dash.

I still yet have to figure out how to engage LC. Followed the manual, and watched youtube....might be just me being not smart enough.

The engine is at operating temperature...
Sport+ mode set
ESC pressed once
Gear lever to the left into S1
Full force on the brake pedal
Pushing the accelerator makes the car bog down, aka no LC active I guess

Also the car is on a flat road...not sure but I guess I'm missing something, just can't figure out what that is.

I just passed the 1,200 mile mark in my Z4, so haven't tried it in this car yet. But in My M340i the tricky part was the accelerator. Once you have the brake pedal all the way down you have to go full on to the floor with the gas pedal. You can't gradually push the pedal down. Just mash it all the way to the floor and you should see a checked flag pop up in the instrument cluster that says it's active. When you see that, you have a few seconds to let off the brake.

Should be fine. What do you mean with bog down? It keeps the revs at 2000 rpm for a few seconds until you release the brakes and then it "launches".

Basically, if you put your foot on the brake and gas at the same time...trying to move but can't, awkward feeling, lol

Yes that's launch control hahaha. Once the notification "Launch Control active" or whatever pops up on the dash you release the brakes.

I have a pretty long driveway, but really just wanted to see the "Launch Control" sign pop up before blocking traffic

For the M3 the mode was manual shifting 1st gear (M1), not S1. Then it shifted for itself even though it was in manual mode. Then wait a few seconds for the flag to arrive.

It worked in S1 on my last car.

Yep you are correct on the z4 it is S1. Weird that it’s different in the M3.
