Just a heads up if anyone else got one of the iPhone 15 models
Wireless charger seems to be causing a serious issue:

Ouch!
For a closed ecosystem, Apple sure are having more problems than they should (I would blame apple on this, not BMW. While the BMW charger appears to be less than great, it does work. Or maybe it is the BMW charger? Do other manufacturers have this issue?).

With that being said, I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max and have used it on the wireless charger without issue. Probably hold off a bit on using the charger to see if Apple pushes a software update, just to be safe. Otherwise phone has been great for me. |

When designing the wireless chargers, I suspect the thermodynamics design didn't adequately consider a common situation where the phone is simultaneously being charged and both navigation and music are actively used within CarPlay. Even my iPhone 13 Pro turned off charging virtually every trip due to overheating because I always have CarPlay running with Waze and Apple Music. My 15 PM doesn't seem to be any better or worse than my 13 Pro. My Outback's wireless charger is almost completely buried in the front of the center console with a slot in front to insert the phone, clearly a poor design from a thermodynamics standpoint. IMHO, someone has completely dropped the ball on specs for automotive wireless chargers. Whether it's Qi, Apple, car manufacturers or some combination is anyone's guess. The problem really can't be resolved without an improvement in cooling, passive or active, or a reduction in performance by throttling the CPU, something nobody wants. The 15 PM has 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores in the CPU, a 6-core GPU, and 16-core neural engine. Hopefully, Apple can find a way (via software) to offload more work to the efficiency cores and thereby reduce heat but I have no idea if that is feasible. |

Even with an external Qi charger, the phone can get hot if the coils are not quite aligned. The BMW wireless charger makes it tricky to get that right. I have to fiddle with the phone every time to get the LED to light up. I suspect the camera hump in an iPhone makes it even worse, since it keeps the phone from lying flat.
Any maker-types out there thinking about a mod to put a magnet in/under/on the wireless charger shelf to align with the magsafe battery in the phone? |

This ^^^. It's about the only option I passed on. If I need my phone charged, I can plug it in.

The wireless charger requires you to take the phone out of your pocket / backpack / bag / etc anyways, so might as well plug it in and charge much faster. |

I have the 15 PM and have put it in the charging tray every trip to no ill effects but won't do it anymore until this is resolved.

Same here. I did see Apple mention they will be releasing an update here shortly to address some of the overheating issues people are having (haven't had that either), so maybe that will cover this as well.

I continue to use my charging tray while they sort it out. I haven't had any issues and warranty will cover any that might occur. Though the tray isn't very useful at charging the battery to full (while using CarPlay), it does do a decent job of keeping it charged to the level it was at when placed in the tray, which is good enough for me.

Why cant BMW get this right after 5 model years????
Almost every redesigned car now comes with a wireless charger. In many its standard equipment. My wife's '23 Macan charger works perfectly. Toyota and Jeep and everyone else can make a wireless charger that doesnt cook the phone. You'd think that BMW would have had their supplier of this part fix it by now. I don't get it. We should file a CA lawsuit against BMW for this. We all paid $500 for it and its useless.

Also, be sure to report it to your service advisor. I mentioned it on my last visit and they pleaded ignorance. I fear the problem is significantly underreported. |
