General AC question

I was out the other day and parked in the hot sun for an hour. Got in the car and it was hot as F**k, so I hit the max AC button and nothing happened, then hit auto and set the temp to 65 and still nothing, the AC wouldn’t blow any air. After driving for approximately 4 minutes the AC turned on and started working properly.

Is there some kind of timer that prevents the AC- blower from turning on if the car is really hot?

I have never had that happen, and we’ve had quiet a few days here lately in the high 90’s and low 100’s.

It does get a smidge hot in Tejas, and the only time I have seen it not blow is immediately after starting, for say 30-ish seconds, which I think is normal to many cars. Haven't seen extended not blowing as described. Will also add that the AC, in TX Summer temps, can freeze your toes with the top up, and other than the back getting a bit sweaty against the seat (take my money for vented seats), the ac will keep up with Summer top down driving in comfort . . .

Our other BMWs will sometimes delay for a little bit. I assume it's waiting for the evaporator to chill down a bit to avoid a blast of hot air. 4 minutes seems long, though.

Here in FL, it can take a minute or so to start blowing hard. The system has temperature and humidity sensors so it won't crank the blower up until the duct temperature is close to the target. You should also check in the "Temperature of the ventilation" settings in iDrive. This does not change the set interior temperature for the driver and front passenger. (This is the electronic replacement for the little mixer wheel that was on the center vents.) In hot weather you want it full cold.
Adjust temperature of the ventilation
1. "CAR"
2. "Settings"
3. "Climate control"
4. "Heating/ventilation"
5. "Temperature adjustment"
6. Set the desired temperature.
The temperature is individually adjusted, e.g.
colder toward blue, warmer toward red.

And a tip when it's really hot in the car: start the AC out in Normal, them switch to Max when the temp in the car gets cooler than ambient. Normal draws air from outside. When you start on those hot days, the outside air is cooler than the cabin air. Once the cabin is cooler than outside, using Max will draw the cooler cabin air cooling things down even faster.

If you have had the cabin filter replaced recently, the tech may have inadvertently moved a lever that closes the A/C damper. There is a service bulletin on this issue. It happened to us on a trip to Colorado last summer, very little air came through the vents even when turning the A/C to Max.

Like other eluded; this is normal.

It takes a few to ensure the system is down to temp before it blows, part of the climate control system, it will then blow air at a temperature to make the cabin the desired temp (so for instance if you set it to 20c when it’s 30c out, it might blow at 16c to get the cabin down to temp).

A little unusual if it took a solid 4 minutes to do anything, less so if it was blowing after 1 and then just took a few to cool down entirely.

Checked this yesterday. Lowest temperature both seats, max fan speed. It took a bit less than 30 seconds after car starting to start blowing full speed. I could kind of feel cold air earlier than that, but wasn’t blowing full.

(Temperature was around 90, sunny, but had a rain storm an hour earlier).
