Advice requested
I bought my 2019 sDrive30i Z4 last year, the car had 5000 miles and I put on another 6000.
The warranty is over in 2 days. what are your thoughts/opnions on getting an extended warranty for a 2019 z4 with 11,000 miles? Thanks

I've got just a little over 20000 miles on my 30i right now and have needed absolutely zero work done. If you take care of your car, do the regular maintenance, then the warranty is just a waste of money.
Throughout my years knowing and being acquaintances with maintainers, private mechanics and company fleet mechanics... all of them say the same thing... it's a waste of money. You're buying insurance is really all you're doing. I did not opt to get any sort of warranty with my 30i and I do not plan on doing it for the M40i when it arrives either. |

How much is it?
Just looked up the annual cost for reliability issues on a Z4, and it's $900/yr. I would think the car would be quite reliable especially with low miles. I never had a problem with my BMW convertibles over the years. Warranties are usually a waste of $. My $0.02. Without a warranty though, you're at risk for sure. So depends how reasonable the warranty price is, what the deductible is, what it covers, etc. https://www.withclutch.com/maintenance-cost/bmw-z4 Last edited by Bimmerfun82; 09-12-2023 at 11:18 AM.. |

Agree also. Any low mileage use new car that has not shown any hint of issues is a waste of money. I have bought 2 extended warranties over the years, back when they were a lot cheaper, and not one has ever had payback. In fact, there are so many exclusions in the fine print, that the one time I had an incident (‘99 528 with 45k miles on it, blew the bleed port right out of the radiator hose in 2005) they only covered the failed part and labor to replace it and NOT the collateral damage. So the hose and replacement were covered but the remachining of the warped head, helicoil inserts and new gaskets were not covered and they were by far the largest cost. It was such a common failure on those cars, the dealership had itnin and out in 2 days and all parts were in stock. Luckily they worked with me for some goodwill relief from BMW, but I learned my lesson.

I have looked at extended warranties for a number of cars and the biggest issue I have is that I don't drive a lot of miles (2500 a year) and all extended warranties are for 3 years and 36k miles at a minimum. I can't seeing paying for that. If somebody had an extended warranty for low miles per year, I might consider it. I also discovered the only kind of warranty to buy is one that includes everything except normal wear items.

I would only spend money on extended warranties for refrigerators and dishwashers. Never for a low mileage car like the Z4 if you take care of it.

Averaging 6K miles per year, I will likely have much less than 50K miles at the end of 7 years so I would effectively be paying for more time, not more miles, at a cost of a little over $1K per year or $89 per month. Of course, your situation might be much different but it's a tough call for me. Ultimately, it's like placing a bet on a game. The "house" (BMW) sets the odds at a rate that ensures they profit and the dealership gets a cut. The last time I bought an extended warranty on a car was 35 years ago. I broke even because it was a less reliable car and required a couple of repairs. It was great peace of mind then because I had a new family and money was tight. Things are much different in this phase of my life. |

PS, I went online and discovered the same issue existed on the French door refrigerators sold under their Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag and Jenn-Air brands that had a similar design and there were several technical service notices issued to their repair people and none of them worked for my refrigerator. |

It’s funny each and every time a warranty deal is quoted on this site, it’s with a name and dealership. I’m sure folks want to share their awesome deal, but I suspect the commissions on these drive the behavior.
I never buy these extended warranties, it makes more sense for me to trade or deal with the cost of repair in the future. One thing people forget about with these is present value of cash vs future value especially with higher inflation. So $3600 now is a higher penalty that $3600 in 5 years. |

Only time I've ever used my warranty was to replace a faulty headlight in my Mazda CX-5. That was $1200 ......... I paid 2800 for the extended warranty lol. That's when I said, never again.
Take the cost you'd pay for the warranty (even over time) and put it in a car maintenance account and leave it alone. |

You can consider these guys: www.caredge.com/extended-warranty
Their pricing for the Z4 is not bad. I just ran your car for a quote and it came back with 5 years from warranty purchase date and 60k total miles for $1,871 and they regularly offer a $100 coupon with a $100 ded. I've been thinking about it for my G29 as well. Mine is a '22 and they offer 10/100k for $2,612 or 8/85k for $1,868. (again note the miles total on the car, but the time is from the warranty purchase date, not the in service date) I often agree with what most folks here are saying, but at these prices, just one covered issue and you are ahead of the game by my math. It is also transferable. The quote includes the caredge guys' profit of $500 for each warranty sold, so definitely some profit, but much less than the typical dealer deal. PS- no commission to me, just something I've been studying/considering as well. PSS - I bought extended warranties on both my BMW bikes. They were both very reasonable at under $1k for 5 add'l years and unlimited miles. At $150/hour repair labor rates, that math is extremely easy in my book. PSSS - Also keep in mind some the little extras some of the plans throw in - roadside assistance, key replacement, rental car - BUT BUYER BEWARE, NOT ALL OF THESE COMPANIES (IN FACT PROBABLY NOT MANY) ARE REPUTABLE OR WILL NECESSARILY STILL BE AROUND WHEN YOU NEED THEM.

In my opinion all extended waranties are scams
In most cases you end up paying more for the warranty than the cost of the repairs when something breaks. It's probably better to set the money you would pay for the extended waranty on a savings account or put it towards a bigger turbo :-) I also have a 2019 with 55k km so far the only thing that broke was a mirror motor, and that was within the original warranty period. It's been tuned and modified since my second year of ownership.

When I bought my z4 from BMW of West St. Louis, the finance manager told me he had a better and cheaper extended warranty package than what BMW offered. Translation: bigger commission. I initially agreed because it was cheaper and could be cancelled for a full refund. I researched the extended warranty company and, no surprise, a lot of complaints including refusal to honor if a single service document was missing or incomplete. I bought the car on a Friday, cancelled the extended warranty on the following Monday, received a check for 100% refund around a week later. My dealership wants $4600 for the 84month/75K Platinum warranty which is why I mentioned the other dealership offering exactly the same plan for $3200, a very sizeable discount. I'm in Illinois and they're in California and I've never done business with them but, for someone looking for a good deal on a genuine BMW extended warranty, I thought it was worth sharing even though I'm still undecided myself. |

I'm not a fan of extended warranties for anything, I figure over the years all the money I've saved on not buying extended warranties on any appliances or electronics can buy me a new one of anything I own many times over.
I believe if something doesn't break during the manufacturer's warranty period it will likely make it until after the extended period too. Having said that, my 2020 M40i went out of warranty in July, I've 1 more year on the drivetrain because of the CPO. It has 38,000 miles with no trouble at all so I don't plan on any extended warranty although I'm waiting 1 more year before I do a tune. |
