This makes me wonder, when was the last time there was a race weekend where qualifying and the race were affected by rain? Nothing recent comes to memory...

Update...

Indeed ! Today at work I talked with my Japanese friend (Kawada-san) about the Suzuka race weekend , and (ofc) also about MAX
He said to me...Come my friend , I'll show you the latest Japanese Suzuka weather model for the race weekend .
With a big grin ,he showed me the RED Suzuka weather warning signs...
Suzuka will be hit by a Typhoon ! He said also to me...Let us hope the race will not be cancelled...

I said to him...MAX loves the rain anyway , and he said a Typhoon is also very strong wind !
Well......

Cancellation or postponement is what I'm a bit worried about. The reports I've read mentioned high winds. Couple that with torrential downpours and there could be an issue with getting the race started

Here's to hoping we hit the sweet spot with wet conditions!

Yeah . I was just thinking if MAX could get the wind on the straights from behind ...

On a serious note : If the Japenese got a weather warning about a Typhoon .
There will be a Typhoon for sure ...

Seen a vid, actually quite a few times of the Japanese GP '76 at Fuji Speedway where Lauda pulled in and lost the championship to Hunt because he deemed the conditions too dangerous with the torrential rain.

So what actually happens if it's too rainy to race? Do they reschedule the race for another weekend? I'm guessing not, the logistics would be insane.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. I'll have to take a look into it this evening. I know they can award half points if less than 75% of the race distance has been completed. So, in theory, they could do a few laps under the safety car and call it a day. That would probably be criticized quite a bit though.

The only other option would most likely be to cancel the race and move on. As you mentioned, the logistics and planning that goes into a whole years race calendar is quite detailed, extensive and done quite far in advance. They might be able to run the race on Monday (assuming the weather improves), but that would most likely interfere with he tight shipping and travel schedule of equipment and personnel.

IIRC, the Bahrain race was completely cancelled a few years back and so a full on cancellation wouldn't be completely far fetched.

EDIT: if less than two laps are completed, no points are awarded. This would imply that a race can be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Cat 4 Hurricane and the weather man says he's never seen an intensification like it, though it's still relatively early.Saturday 100kph winds then Sunday should improve significantly so just a thought, quali and race on Sunday...

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember a case in the past where qualifying was run on Sunday morning. Can't remember if it was F1 or not, but it might have been.

Hmmmm, I'll have to look that up this evening as well.

Japan 2004 comes to mind and remember Schumi got pole on Sunday.
Oh and US 2015 also qualifies on Sunday.

I will be pissed if I stayed up until 1:00am and they cancelled the race. A little less pissed than those who bought tickets and traveled, but pissed nonetheless!

I think it will be ok seing the predicted trajectory of Hagibis.Saturday looks like the bad storm day calming down Sunday and I'll wager that quali and race will be on Sunday.
Don't ask me about Practice 1-3,Friday?
