Sound like you had it in Sport Plus.
Okay and if so whats the benefit? Faster shifting or something? Can't see why I'd deliberately want a car to drive that way.
I don't know why you wouldn't just pick the gears yourself.
So it's my fault then? I can't drive an automatic tranny in automatic mode? :

Ideally it would pick the right gear perfectly, but it doesn't. So if you want it to be in the right gear you're going to have to pick the gear yourself with paddles or a MT.

Agree - the 8-spd ZF in my M240i is excellent. So much smoother than the 7-spd DCT was in my 135is (yet shifts just as fast) and so much faster than the 6MT in my M235i. After having driven manuals for 25 yrs, I now get more joy out of the new paddle-shift autos than manual (and I use the paddles 100% of the time).

I can't imagine anyone who has driven the 8-spd ZF call it a bad transmission.
The ZF8 is great, but it's no DCT/PDK.

A better driver's car, he said, with better control and handling. He didn't say it was faster or more potent. I believe him

I previously owned a 2006 M3 and 2010 Z4, both with the DCT. Currently have a 40Mi and believe that the ZF8 performs as well as, if not better than the DCT. Operationally they are identical, you can let them shift on their own in the various driving modes or you can take over shifting using shift lever or paddles.

What do you mean by this? My Boxster has two trunks, my M roadster had one. My Boxster has a lot of tech, my M Roadster had none. Both are fantastic driver's cars but the Porsche definitely doesn't lack luxury or utility comparably. Now X3 definitely adds utility over the Boxster so I'll give you that, but so would a Macan.

I am truly amazed by people that come into the Z4 forum to "trash" the Z4. Really? What is the goal? What is the pleasure received? I can't imagine going into someone's forum to bash their cars.

Agree. And the subtext of those posts is cringe worthy. Honest criticism is always desired though.

Yeah I agree. While the 8sp ZF is a great automatic, and I have that in my 435i, I much prefer the 7spd DCT in my F80 M3 Comp. That’s the tranny BMW should have stuck in the Z4 M40i and Supra.

I love SavageGeese's reviews but his point about BMW and their "layering" was a bit lost on me too. I think that all he was trying to say really is that they do a good job of blending sport, luxury and utility - but so do Audi and MB in their more performance oriented cars, so BMW is not unique in this respect.

What's funny is that the head of BMW M, Markus Flasch, just said this last month:

"Manual is very important. The manual stick shift is not a performance-bringer, because an automatic transmission is just faster, you can ask any race driver. But it gives the vehicle character and I kind of compare it to people who love mechanical watches; it isn’t more precise and it doesn’t have any advantage at all but it’s a character feature. So is a stick shift."

I guess that's why the Z4/Supra will never be a true M car.

so apparently there will only be what 3 models of true M car ?

I kind of want BMW to just cancel all the manuals just to see the amount of whining it would cause. it's going to happen eventually. I'm sure all those m5 drivers out there probably consider their car an m car

It's front page news which brings out all trolls from underneath all bridges to primarily debate which transmission sucks more.

Very disingenuous headline here.

He essentially said the Z4 is more capable at the limits. But otherwise it’s refined to the point of being boring such as in normal day-to-day driving.

M2 is legitimately fun at ANY speed. But like many reviews have said its tail happy.

Hardly. Do you guys actually go to BMW club and track events and talk to people? The manual transmission hasn't become some rare thing amongst enthusiasts at events.
