Doesn't matter if it drivers "better". Which it won't. It doesn't have a manual option or a Porsche badge. At that price buyers will make the jump to Porsche for the pedigree and the higher resale value when the time comes.

That's perfect! In a few months after release, when they're still sitting on the lots, dealers will be offering deep discounts!

Also let's not forget a Civic is 30 k, many seem to expect a top of the line Z4 be priced at 40 k....

MSRP on my 2011 Z4 35is was $76k, and my buddy had a 2018 Boxster GTS that was almost $100k and barely had any options, so this doesn't sound too bad. At the very least it's not surprising. But I'm sure we'll get 8 more pages on people whining about how overpriced BMW is for not being cheaper than everyone, how much of a better deal a Hyundai is, etc., like in the M340 thread.

Regardless of their price, I dont think this new "M40" badging is well conceived as AMG43 or S trim or etc. It feels to me that they are little too late for this niche IMHO.

Frankly, I like it that BMW provides a nicely optioned car for an almost reasonable price. Almost like a Corvette. And yes, I know, different car, but frankly if I want a loud and flashy sports car, I am looking at a Corvette, not at a Boxster.

Why would anyone buy a Z4 M40i for Corvette Stingray Grand Sport money?

Or "why would anybody take the Z4M40 for MORE than M2C money?"

Bottom line is that there is no car this cross-shops well with.

It will flop like Rob Schneider doing a futuristic sci-if Shakespeare reimagining.

I can see wealthy retires (predominantly the ladies) from Florida leasing these cars. As far as the enthusiasts are concerned, this car will only make sense in the used car market after it has depreciated significantly. And even then, the absence of the manual transmission for this type of a car will be a problem.

I think this is a great looking car. I doubt that I would spend this kind of $$ on it though.

And I still remember the incredible lease deals on them, so dealers could unload cars. No one would buy them at that price.

A Civic is 19k. Far from your 30k.
