Audi S1's and the LWB used in hillclimbs also the famous Pikes Peak challenge and I think the most awesome rally car of all time.

Man, it's been decades since I saw that footage, hate to admit it but I had forgotten all about Henri Toivonen. A devastating event that finally brought in some safety measures.
It was a wild time.

The S1 E2 dominated until Peugeot came out with the cheating mid-engined goldfish bowl 205

Still time before F1 P1 so I'll add Walter Rohrl's adventures with the S1 and how to drive and steer the E2 which needed plenty of left foot movement.

More on Toivonen's off which led Balestre to sideline Group B.

I'm a big big rally/Gr B/ Ari Vatanen/Lancia fan and remember exactly when I heard/saw the news of 'greatest rallytalent ever' Toivonen's crash @ Corsica. I was almost 16 and watching television; the 8 'o clock news with my dad; I was flabbergasted and very very sad I remember......

I have some scale models of rallycars in 1:43 and 1:18

I also enjoy the pre GrB era with the Escorts/Fiats/Asconas/Vauxhall Chevettes /Talbot Sunbeam/911SC and off course the Stratos

Thanks for this thread Rick! ;-)

Cheers
Robin

Also a 'GrB' car , the Manta 400, not so fast due to an NA carburetted and not fuel injected (more power about 280BHP) engine(vs the upcoming turbo engines) and rwd(love it, lol)

Ari never really liked the Manta he once stated....

Yeah Pond was a very fast and nice guy.

Here he is in the 6R4.

Salonen the not so stereotypical World Champion in the 205. Etcetera.

I'm such a big Lancia Delta S4 fan. I'ts always been in my top 3 of greatest cars ever: McLaren F1(GTR/LM), RUF CTR(the original one) and Delta S4.

Only a few years ago you could buy an S4 Stradale for let's say 150k €, now they're in between 500k €-750k €. The streetversions.....

I have to look it up, but this one went for >half a million € about two years ago(only 2000kms...)

The rally/competition versions driven by Marku Alιn etc are now closer to the 1 million € mark......

Now I need some coffee

Senna also tested some rallycars back then...

The Escort in the back is the not so famous RWD( normal Escort Mk3s are FWD) RS1700T of which only a few were built. It couldn't stand a chance against the upcoming AWD Quattros/205T16/S4s so Ford skipped that project and went on with the RS200

I have a scale model of that car in 1:43

Here we see some footage of Senna with the cars, I also have that particular Senna 6R4 scalemodel in 1:18 including his yellow bespoke helmet lol

Also a marvellous video(imho!) of the comeback after his big crash of 'my hero' (sort of, I don't have many) Ari Vatanen.

Great video by Henry Catchpole about Audi Quattro E2 Chassis #2. This was the car in the Semperit Rally with the PDK fitted. Links to vids below, enjoy!

'Does that mean you're not going flat out from the start'?

''As surprising as it may sound I try to be sensible''

Ari V answering a journo's question before the start.

The moonface wheels on the S4 are not dissimilar to the one's on my 928.

@Rick so you also have a 928. Nice! Car of the year 1978 or something(?) as I remember.

Deep Purple 2.0 original video 'Perfect Strangers' has a 928(S4?) in it.

Ken now is Audi Ambassador:

They bought the red LCE (?) S1 Replica (700+BHP) and painted it white.

That's right the European Car of the Year I believe which was unusual for the panel to pick a sports car and I posted on here that vid track from DP on the music thread, from what I can see it's the 4.5 the first model of it.
