What is the benefit to storing images online vs. on your PC?

Well if you want to share pictures to someone and the platform or website you're on doesn't support picture upload you have to link the picture somewhere.

I think this forum has picture upload but I would still prefer just to insert an image from URL, simpler imo.

Understand. The problem in this forum is that many photos are linked but are no longer where they were linked, so no photo shows up. For forums like this, embedding is much better.

Well, what photobucket did is not allow 3rd party hosting anymore. You have to pay 400$ a year or 40$ per month to allow 3rd party hosting.

Imgur has always been one of the best and will never do something like this.

its not so much the storing as it is the hosting. makes it easier to share pictures or caption/explain specific pictures than to attach a crap load and leave the viewer guessing. 3rd party hosting is what makes the euro delivery threads more interesting to read- you get to read notes on a specific picture.

basically, all my photos on forums for the last 10 years-ish are no longer present because photobucket is lame. think of all the DIY threads all over the internet with captions/etc., that are now unviewable. fuck photobucket, pardon my french.

Storing photos where you have control of them eliminates that from happening.

Say we're having a conversation about Mustang crashes and I want to find a funny picture pertinent to the topic. I find something suitable on Google but I don't know if it's going to be there in another week. So I save it, upload it to a photo hosting site that I control and link to it. Now it won't disappear unless I want it to.

As for the OP, I too recently took it in the shorts from Photobucket so I set up a free Flickr account.

I do the same thing, except I just save it to my PC. That's just me, I guess.

But note, Photobucket was never the top image hosting site remember that.

Going with something more mainstream and popular like Imgur won't cause you problems like these. And you can make an account to and manage your pictures.

I use Flickr as my host and tertiary backup. You get 1TB free and unlimited as a "Pro" member. I've got BBCode links and Embedded HTML going back to 2007 that are unbroken.

If you "deep link" someone else's image, then you're at their mercy to keep it up on the host. Digital Millennium Copyright Act does not allow you to copy the image and post it from your own computer or server. Even deep-linking is a controversial area, but my attorney won't accept a deep-linking infringement case on contingency. To avoid potential lawsuits, deep-link (some say hot-link) the images of others. If you can't do that, then don't do anything with the images of others.

So, just to refresh, linking to someone else's content is generally not considered copyright infringement. Copying content to your own computer, server or host and then uploading from there is infringement, which could subject you to Statutory Damages under DMCA. It doesn't matter if you credit the copyright owner.

People can still get around it, but Flickr allows Settings where others cannot download your images. We all know that is not iron clad protection;however, working around that shows that the infringer had Intent and could increase damages.

Another vote for Imgur. Easy, popular, free, and unrestricted.
