IMO this was a waste of a review. They already reviewed (and liked) the 4 cyl model. Really should have done the M40i this time around with added information, inexcusable to completely miss out on driving the top model.
Comparison, imagine a SG review omitting the Z06 in a Corvette generation (c6,C7,c8). “Well GM didn’t go enough with this car” meanwhile the Z06 not reviewed. |

I had a 997.2 Carrera S cabriolet, an M6 convertible and a Mustang GT convertible before buying my Z4. I'm old and don't drive a lot any more, so I'm not interested in tracking my car. There are a lot winding country roads around here, but they are obscured by trees and the risk of running into some form of farm implement, or deer, on the road is quite high. Basically, I want a car that I feel confident with in whatever circumstances I encounter. So, here's my feelings.
The 997.2 handling is a bit sharper than the Z4, but it's not a huge difference for my driving style. The ride is worse. The engine has no low end, so you have to wind the piss out of it. There are situations where the oversteer can surprise you. The B58 engine has much more low end and is more versatile. I feel more confident and relaxed driving the Z4. I never quite felt like that in the 997.2 The M6 weighs about 4400lbs, maybe more. It didn't feel like it weighed that much but that may be due to the suspension being very stiff. Beautiful interior and features and the turbo V8 was great. But, in the end, the ride was very harsh and you still knew it was a heavy car. I didn't keep it long. Past experience with harsh suspension and big wheels, on the roads we have around here, are an invitation to major repair bills. The Mustang GT convertible is kind of an odd duck. It's a great performance car value. However, it has the same weak low end as the 997.2 and weighs around 4000lbs, so that's not good. The ride is comfortable and the A10 transmission is extremely versatile. But, it feels like driving a school bus. It doesn't handle the mass nearly as well as the M6. The rear end gets loose a lot easier than it should, too. It just isn't confidence inspiring. The coupe is better, but I'd never own one. My motto is "if it has a fixed roof it needs 4 doors". The Z4 is the perfect car for me at this point in my life. My wife has an SUV so we have our bases covered. |
