A lot of people's version of being "well traveled" is visiting tourist resorts for a few days at a time and saying they've "been" to X number of countries.

It's like visiting the Ritz in San Francisco for 3 days and thinking you know the US.

Coincidentally (or not), San Francisco has a pretty high number of people like that...they've been to tourist resorts in 20 other countries, but have never ventured outside of San Francisco aside from going to Burning Man, Outside Lands, SXSW, or Vegas for a birthday party.
Definitely agree lol. Like going to Cancun and saying they've been to Mexico. This thread didn't shock me because I assumed OP didn't bulletproof his car for fun.

I read somewhere that a lot of Americans don't even have a passport. Is that true?

America is a very huge place between the coastal states and it's filled with people who never left their state. No need for a passport.

Very much so lol... I grew up the son of a oil and gas businessman so we lived all over when I was younger... we had armored cars in South Africa and Venezuela in the early 90's.

When we lived in SA, I remember people trying to car jack us being a semi regular occurrence...

The majority of Americans are clueless to how the actual world is... especially places under civil unrest... most are so sheltered in this country.

Military service also opens your eyes to the way most of the uncivilized world behaves... I think most Americans would be horrified to know how it actually goes down in most of the world... they rather watch CNN or FOX and sit in their bubble.
I definitely agree. I grew up in a shithole country as a kid and deploy frequently now to 3rd world and war torn countries. It was not strange for the wealthy to ride around in armored vehicles regardless of the areas they visited.

Every time I come back from a deployment I get even more irritated by people bitching and moaning about the US not realizing how lucky we are.

I have, the first time being an all expenses paid six month stay in beautiful Southeast Asia, courtesy of Uncle Sam. One thing's for sure, if I had to live in a place as dangerous as where the OP does I wouldn't draw attention to my affluence by driving a BMW. I'd have a Yugo.
Yeah I thoroughly enjoy uncle sams vacations

But I agree. Although OP makes it seem like you're somewhat screwed regardless. Which I believe him if that's the case.

So true. Some people need to escape their safe bubbles.
It's off at a bit of a tangent, but don't 40% of Americans live in a household with a gun? In the U.K. it's around 7% and the vast majority of those are shotguns. Consequently, guns are much harder to get hold of and are only used in 0.2% of crimes.

So the U.K. does actually have something going for it!!👍

You don't have the pyramids, Mount Vesuvius, the leaning tower of Pisa and best of all, the Nurburgring though😉. It strikes me as a bit odd, that people wouldn't want to see other places.

What's the ratio of attacks with pistol calibers vs rifle calibers? Does that highly support IIIA being the sweet spot for protection, or is level III or IV more appropriate (but at what cost)?

Yeah because even domestic travel only requires an ID or drivers license and as stated above, many barely leave their hometown, let alone state or country. Many Americans consider it an adventure to leave their small town and move to NYC or LA

We also have a lot of poverty. Not 3rd world shantytown poverty, but poverty that means not a whole lot of travel. The education system is also horrific.

Level 4 is very expensive and very heavy. Don't forget you should modify suspension, brakes etc also, not just the frame. With level 4 you are NOT EVER opening your windows. Not possible unless you pay a VERY HEFTY price (over 300-500k).

That's certainly BMW modding that we don't see much on here. Good job.

I work for a Brazilian company and go to SP a few times a year. I know how much a BMW stands out over there, so completely get it. First time there I did ask myself why no Brazilian wears a watch. :

I've got to ask the question though, surely there are much better base vehicles than a BMW for bullet proofing? Wrangler, F150, Range Rover, etc. come to mind.

You may think it's an ignorant comment, but in all fairness the subject of this thread states "...ask me anything". I asked if he was a drug dealer.

Also, I don't think I'm a "big contributing factor for why the US is on a downhill trend" as I don't live in the US (I'm Canadian).

I bet its actually higher than that... its probably in the 60% range and 40% have more than one gun in the house.

But considering the sheer number of guns here, America really has very little gun crime (we like to make a big deal about it)... 300+ million guns go every day without ever being used in a crime. It's something like 1% of 1% that ever actually gets used in a crime and something like 90% of those are stolen from law-abiding citizens. The numbers are really really tricky since it becomes such a hot charged topic, and rarely is data compiled without a bias.

I went to Vegas over Christmas, after a 20 year absence. It used to be a good place to go for an inexpensive vacation. Not anymore. Now it's more expensive than New York City. For the best vacation at a reasonable cost, and as safe as it gets, go to Montreal or Quebec City. After the pandemic, that is.

Most don't. Remember, the US is as large as all of Europe, and it's almost as diverse.

Statistics hey?! Yes I know the majority of gun deaths are suicides too.

In the U.K. it's hanging. Grim whichever.

Have done some mental health work, there's a school of thought that says a lot of people who failed suicide attempts are glad. Which suggests that if you make it hard to do, people benefit.

Anyway, enough of that, stay safe all,

My old company had an office on Faria Lima Brigadero and I and was in São Paulo quite a few times over the last couple of years. Inside the office was a map, with concentric circles, safe, do not go to after 6, and do not go to ever. Avoid conspicuous signs of wealth (watches, even cell phones). It was one city where I never felt safe out of the downtown core

Yeah super sad but the majority of gun deaths are self-inflicted... which suggests a completely different problem, but most people want something to blame other than people's decisions.

Yeah making it harder probably saves lives but at a cost to the freedoms of those who obey the laws. We really need mental health reform in this country... not nerfing anything dangerous. A big part of that is being honest, talking about mental health, and not just medicating everyone because they are sad that their life isn't what they wanted. Life is hard, it sucks sometimes, it's not fair... but to be honest, struggle makes you into the human you are supposed to be.

All my friends are a little fucked up... even if they grew up with the money... bad shit happens and its how we deal with it that builds the character. I grew up with money but in order for my family to have the money, I had a workaholic dad and a Mom in Med School.... so money wasn't an issue, but I raised myself. I would never ever wish that on my kids, but then I look at how that has shaped me, my friends, that were raised similar... The struggle is a good thing and teaches you what you are capable of.

Sorry for the off-topic thread jack, but everyone on here is pretty good about decent intellectual conversation.
