I vaguely recall press release (or maybe someone posted it here) that the 7.2020 or 8.2020 is going to be available OTA in fall.

Only "minor" updates are possible OTA. "Major" updates have to be done at dealer. You can't update OTA a 2019 to a 2020 version

My M40i is a 2020, but my software is 11/2019.70, so what makes your 2020 different?

I call this BS. That would mean after the first year you would not see any OTA upgrades. Not going to happen.

I meant I have a 2020 sw version. I have 03/2020.31. Got the dealer to install upgrade when I had it in for 1 year service.

No it doesn't mean that. People will still receive updates xx.2019 during 2020, 2021 and as long as BMW wants to. Is it the best way ? No, but it is how BMW does it actually.

There is no subversion like you mentioned here.
Every new version got a new version number.
So i assume, once BMW let the 07/2020, every capable car will be upgraded.

I would call BS too, but why would (a few) owners be getting 2019 updates half way through 2020 when the android auto update is now available? It's also strange that there were several minor updates to the late 2019 version and some of these were not available until summer 2020. Nobody has seen the July 2020 update by OTA yet, and we're now into September.

BMW OTA is a farce and we all know it.

OTA updates are a risky business due to the potential to brick a car (happened to a few on the forum). Hence, I am sure BMW will be choiceful how often and which version to release for OTA updates.

After Tesla they are the first to do so and we are all beta tester.

If you have no issues with the software your car came with I'd be careful to update going forward. In the German forum folks are complaining about undesired changes to motor management or exhaust noise.

After issues with my last OTA update I will only do this whilst parked at my nearest BMW dealer/service location...

I'd also skip the update if I wasn't having issues with Apple Carplay bugging out all the time so I'm eager for improvements in the software. Of course, the new update might have no fixes there, or the problem might be on the Apple side of things, but regardless it does compel me to update just in case. Otherwise I'd follow 'if it ain't broke don't mess with it' viewpoint.

I received the OTA update recently and love spotify. First oil change due this week (however car seems to change its own oil) Only 7000 miles and needed 2 quarts already. Should i ask dealer for software upgrade or not. I don't want the cars performance to suffer as a result, but i also feel with latest software i might be first to get Android Auto .
