$250,000 a year in alimony?

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/16/us/con...html?hpt=hp_t2

According to divorce documents, he agreed to pay his wife, on average, $250,000 a year in alimony.

HOLY SHIT! I'm sorry how much!
$250k! + the house! WTF! And he was ok with it?

Peter Lanza is listed on LinkedIn as a tax director and vice president of taxes for GE Energy Financial Services in the New York City area.

Wait didn't GE not pay any taxes for the like the past few years?
HOLY CRAP! I need to see if they are hiring! HOW MUCH DOES THIS GUY MAKE!
To give that away like it was nothing? WOW! I want his job!

yes. you pretty much end up paying 1/4 of your income in child support. Alimony adds even more. The dude is making a cool mil, so this checks out

Source: I've been paying child support for 10+ years.

I say that if he still has to pay to maintain her even after getting a divorce, she still needs to give up a proportional amount of booty to the amount of support he is still paying. Haha.

His salary was reported as $450k. FWIW, I have two friends with parents who work at GE. Both live in huge houses right on the water (one in Westport, one in Rowayton). It's roughly half of his income so I'm not sure why you guys are so shocked. Also, $250k in salary is pretty much middle of the road here.

Wow, that just seems unreal, but I don't know the circumstances behind the divorce. I've heard a couple of divorce horror stories through people I've worked with where the wife was the one cheating, yet somehow still ended up getting everything out of the settlement. I don't understand how a situation like that works out.

Depends on if a community property state. Then it's a 50/50 split of assests period.
In Cali where I got married and divorced after 21 years it's no fault divorce. My ex left for someone else and I had to pay her $3100/month and give half of everything, no child support kids lived with me. Court ordered her to pay no support period. But there is a silver lining, damn hag was so hell bent on proving that she could move on she moved in with her boyfriend after 3 months. I took her back and they changed the support to $900. She decided to marry the poor fool after a year and I send 0 not even a Christmas card.

Sounds like you got pretty lucky! Most would play the game and never get married so I commend her for at least being honest.

One of my favorite classes in my MBA program was business law....do you know why?
I wrote a prenup and had the professor vet it....
Next time I get married the woman walks in with what she has and walks out with what she has.
Since the cards are stacked against us men.....just because a few assholes made us look bad....we need to protect ourselves!
That said this woman needed to also have her head checked.
She was living free and getting $250k a year in free cash and she couldn't afford to send her engineer/asberger kid to some mental institution? REALLY?

But guys just to put thing perspective for you, average family income in the US as of today was $46k per family.
How sad is that!

In the UK it is always a no fault divorce : divorce here rarely goes to court. House / finances / kids are typically settled pre-court. No heed is given to fault. My wife had a very large percentage of our house sale and I also pay maintenance to her for our children - who spend around 75% of year with her / 25% with me. I pay no maintenance "for her" though - due to the large capital settlement at divorce, so when my kids reach 18, the "child maintenance" piece will end. Around 30% to 35% of my net goes to my ex-wife in child maintenance.

The UK law looks to protect the best interests of the children, as ultimately, they are the ones who suffer the greatest when their parents divorce.

I'm fortunate that my kids seem to have come through the process relatively unscathed. They are well balanced kids.

Like a lot of life changing events: no matter what the financial costs, the human / emotional costs are the ones to be avoided, or managed as well as they feasibly can.

Also, you can't go backwards, so even if you do get screwed over financially, it is best to focus on the future and things that you can control, rather than bad things that have happened. Bitterness will just eat away at you, and that effects your psyche and general well being.

Financial settlement is only one part of the picture.

When i was going through my divorce.
I paid for my x wife's education and bought her a car and took care of her friends and family as they were my own.
She brought up the word alimony.
I looked at her square in the face and told her to go fuck her self with a fork.
She realized she was going to have to fight for it and knew she was in the wrong, since she was cheating on me, so she for the first time of her fucking life shut the fuck up and sat the fuck down!

Gotta bump this for reality sake. Honesty was not one of her qualities. I only found out about the boy friend moving in from my kids, had my attorney background search it and found mail being delivered in his name regularly for 2 months. I took her back for the reduction. As far as marriage, again no honesty there, she tried to get remarried in Las Vegas while not legally divorced in Cali(divorce not final yet at the time) and guess what that came up on the family courts radar. Commending her for virtues would be like comemending DB cooper for the guts to jump. I did get lucky in that fact I had a very good and very expensive attorney.
