best photo and video editing?

Just like the tittle says, just looking for photo and video editing softwares.
I've been told gimp or bimp w/e its called is good for picture editing and its good. As for video I heard jaycut is free as well but apperantly their site is down for upgrades.
Are there any other softwares out there that are free or cheap. Not looking to spend a lot of money since I'm just looking to use the software every now and then. I have a Mac, don't know if that helps.

i use iMovie. Very easy to use and pretty fast/good for just basic normal video editing.

iMovie works well. Final cut pro is awesome but $$ unless you get a bootleg copy

If money is a matter for you then you can try Fotor or Darktable for photo editing. They both are free and available for mac users.

I use Lightroom for photo editing and iMovie for my little movie clips.
