I understand why people buy cars such as the X1, X3, X5, and X7. It's when you start to seriously cut the roofline where it doesn't make sense anymore. i.e. X4 and x6. The x2 and what is claimed to be an X8 here (But I personally think it looks more like a Mercedes-Benz than a Bimmer, I mean look at the size of those headlights) aren't culprits of it to the same degree. Like the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Macan, the cargo compartment is cut somewhat shorter due to a higher rake in the rear glass.

Here's what I don't get. Why produce such a gargantuan SUV but then only give it four seats. Realistically, since this is the range-topping car, it'll feel similar 7 Series wearing high heels - Taller, and, to some, looks prettier, but it lacks the mobility of regular shoes. Sorry for the terrible analogy.

Companies are committing financial suicide by cutting down on sedans and wagons and instead focusing on SUVs. I'm a culprit of this, too. I drive an SUV. They're so damn tempting, but the issue is that SUVs are so much more wasteful than sedans and wagons. Car manufacturers get away with it since gas prices are ridiculously low at the moment. The second we have another oil crash, or by the time governments start to push heavier emissions/efficiency standards, manufactures such as Ford and GM will need to spend billions in R&D to rapidly develop new sedans and wagons since SUVs will be seen as wasteful.

The issue isn't just gas. There's also the fact these vehicles cost more to produce due to the simple need for more material. They're bigger.

TL;DR
The X8 at least makes more sense than an X6. However, it still hardly makes sense. An X8 would be extremely wasteful, and I don't see why people would buy one over a 7-series sedan or an 8-series Gran Coupe. BMW isn't Range Rover.

Anyways, I probably just wasted everyone's time. Sorry about that. Feel free to criticize. I won't feel attacked.
There's a market for this. It's not practical but none of the SAV Ms are ever going to be practical.

New BMW X8 spy images

Some updated spy photos of the X8 courtesy of Autocar UK:

Quote:
Development work is under way at BMW on a luxury SUV flagship to rival the Bentley Bentayga, with new images giving a closer look at a previously spotted prototype.

Thought to be called the X8, following a series of global trademark filings in 2018, it is likely that the new arrival will be the most expensive model in BMW's line-up when it goes on sale. A launch date this year was initially rumoured but, given the amount of disguise on this prototype, the car is probably still at least a few months away from being unveiled.

These early images suggest that the X8 will not, as previously thought, adopt a coupé-style roofline like that of the similarly conceived Audi Q8 and Lamborghini Urus. Instead, we can see that its upright rear, extended roofline and lengthy rear overhang should allow for three rows of seats inside, most likely with the choice of six or seven seats.

At the front, the prototype adopts different styling to that of its X7 stablemate, going against earlier indications that it will be heavily based on the existing car. Though the X7's prominent front grilles look to have been carried across, the X8's lower air intake appears to have been reshaped, with a new bonnet design and lower splitter further setting it apart.

The X7 is due for a facelift, but a recently spotted prototype indicated that changes to the front end will centre on the introduction of narrower new headlights, in line with the upcoming i7 electric saloon, which also appear to feature on the X8.

In 2018, then head of development Klaus Fröhlich told Autocar that BMW was evaluating the idea of a new addition at the top end of its model line-up. “The sector is growing fast, so there will be opportunity,” he said. “It is early to talk about X8, but one of the first decisions I made when I worked on product strategy was to take the X5 and make the X6.

“Everyone said it was not necessary, but it worked. Now we have the X2, X4 and X6. They are emotional and sporty derivatives that work for us.

“There is room for X8 – especially in markets like China – but there are no decisions yet. Each car must have a distinct character, and these are the sort of areas that take time to evaluate.”

At the time, internal discussion was believed to be centred on whether the new flagship should serve as a coupé-bodied or extended-wheelbased version of the X7. The latter was said to be a popular option but more complex as it would require BMW to create a bespoke platform using elements from both the X7 and its Rolls-Royce Cullinan sibling.

Technical details have yet to be revealed, but the X8 can be expected to offer the same xDrive40i and xDrive40d engines as its X7 stablemate, while ushering in a plug-in hybrid version - confirmed by the mandatory hybrid stickers on this prototype - and a range-topping X8 M performance variant.

Another useless offering for brain-dead bmw buyers and this comment comes from someone who has sold BMWs for a living since 1976.

The best we can ever offer in defense of these aberrations is that they keep cars like the M2 available.

Many people here talking about the X8 being a pseudo-coupe version of the X7. But supposedly, as SCOTT26 points out, this is supposed to be an all-new BMW vehicle from the ground up. Not based on the X7.

Not sure what I think of it, I was a skeptic about the X7 and it turned out pretty good.

That rendering is garbage. Can't even get a basic perspective right. The standard for content on these car 'news' sites is so low it's almost funny.

I don't think the grill per se looks bad. It's everything around the grill that looks disjointed and hodge podge. WAY over styled if you can call that style..

Thumbs up

I hope I'm not spoiling anything but our friend @bmw43 has posted yet another remarkable render

What works really well here is that the lower headlights are integrated into the 'big mouth' part of the front fascia (not the M style 'small mouth'), visually pulling them down and lumping them together with the other dark elements in that area (air intakes, plastic...), which makes them dissolve into the 'background' rather than stand out like a weird second pair of eyes. These lower headlights actually look like a projected shadow underneath the top of the 'big mouth' crease, further reinforcing the feel that there is unambiguously only one pair of actual 'eyes' on the fascia, the above headlights with the signature corona rings (though I'm pretty sure it will have actual corona rings and not the iX style DRLs used here). For sure it's very close to the real deal if the spyshots are anything reliable to go by.

After seeing the grille size of the iX guess people would consider BMW designers as 'adjusting' it responding to the feedback or backlash the electric SUV has received on social media and public. I think BMW is getting away with whatever they do on the X8 and other upcoming BMW SAVs.

BMW single-handedly created the whole coupe-SUV genre back in 2008 before downsizing this recipe six years later with the X4 and once again in 2017 with the even smaller X2. It would appear a fourth member of the company's Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) lineup is in the works, and rumors say it's going to bear the "X8" moniker.

Fresh spy shots allow us to get up close and personal with a prototype of the luxobarge, but the heavy camouflage gets in the way of seeing the bodywork. The disguise can't hide the vehicle's larger-than-life appearance, eschewing the X7's nearly flat roof for a gently sloped coupe-like roofline. A giant front grille hides under a mesh, and we're noticing the radar sensor in the lower grille is also quite large.

The fully electric iX showed BMW is courageous to come out with an unconventional design. It would appear the German luxury marque will be going down the same road with the X8. Take the headlights for example, which although provisional, they're placed where you will find the final clusters on the production-ready model. They're mounted much lower on the front for a layout we've also seen on the next-generation 7 Series and its electric i7 counterpart.

The jury is still out on whether these new BMWs will have split headlights with upper daytime running lights stacked on the main cluster. The taillights are also placeholders, but we can tell they'll be extending on the tailgate judging by the two bulges. The rear window and wiper are similar to what you'll find on the iX, while the roof spoiler seems to be small.

The mandatory "Hybrid Test Vehicle" stickers and a fuel cap on the front fender on the driver's side reveal the X8 had an electrified powertrain. It is believed a fully fledged M version will adopt a hybrid setup by combining the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor for a total output of approximately 750 horsepower.

Seeing as how the prototype lacked the final lights, chances are an official reveal won't take place in the near future. Our money is on a late 2021 debut, with the X8 M slated to arrive roughly a year later. When it does eventually debut, the X8 could be offered only with four seats instead of the X7's three-row arrangement. It has all the ingredients to become the brand's most expensive model, especially if we're talking about the M variant.
