I have wireless charging in my '20 Subaru Outback and it has never overheated in my 3+ years of ownership.

I charge my iPhone 13 Pro on my wireless charger every single night and it has never overheated.

Clearly there are ways to implement wireless charging effectively without overheating. I've been witness to it.
I am fortunate to own almost every luxury brand of car … the brands I own which have wireless chargers are Audi, Merc, BMW, and Genesis. I also have a a Mitsubishi with wireless charging. I don’t use the wireless chargers in any of them because after trying the charger initially, the phone was always very warm or hot after 15+ minutes of charging. I use iPhone.

If you’ve had a different experience, I don’t disbelieve you. Happy that it has worked for you. I don’t understand how, but I take you at your word.

I have used wireless charging on my Toyota and Lexus, I have found that both of these vehicles produce a very hot phone wanted to sit in the charger for more than 30 minutes. Conversely, I’ve never experienced any issues with the wireless charger on the Tesla. I’m not sure what they do differently however, it seems to work.

I’ve had similar experiences with wireless charging. Based on the forum, here, I decided to forego the wireless charging in the BMW.

BMWAG is aware of thermal problems with wireless charging tray 1.0.
That is why they have incorporated a cooling fan in the new wireless charging tray 2.0.
These new trays have been used from the I20 iX, but will not come to our G29.

So far I haven't run into any issues but I've got a iPhone 14 Pro and I've been driving around with the top down and averaging 50-60 degree weather.

Phones will only overheat on the wireless charging tray if Android Auto (I don't know about Carplay) is connected to the car. The phone will actually disable wireless charging on their own if they are overheated.

Without the Android Auto active I can charge the phone wirelessly for as long as I want without any issue.

CarPlay was on when it got too hot & shut down. Thought it was more affected by my WAZE app.

Android Auto and CarPlay certainly dramatically increase the odds of overheating.

I think that Waze will only add to the overheating issue as CarPlay was already running when you entered your destination.

Also, once you enter your destination you should definitely play "Summer in the City" using Apple Music as it is the appropriate song for this wireless charging problem.

The Stop Sale was made effective February 09, 2023.

There is no remedy available yet. Therefore no timetable.

Affected Vehicles:
-Z4
-8 Series
-2 Series Coupe

“The wireless charging tray will mot recognize the digital key removal. As a result, some functions like window sunroof, and convertible top operation could remain active.

The bulletin will be updated when additional information becomes available.”

BMW Dealers cannot sell new, used, or Certified vehicles that have this stop sale attached to the VIN. I’m not sure if it’s across the board or VIN-specific.

=====

Even though in my case the Stop Sale was made effective the day before my delivery, it seems that the Dealer had no reason to know about the Stop Sale until the time of delivery — when they do a key check. I highly recommend that anyone about to purchase any Z4 have a conversation with the BMW Dealer about the Stop Sale and check the VIN.

Does anyone else know about this too and have any additional information?
Also feel free to rant!

I have an 8 series (Alpina B8) due to port Brunswick today, my CA just told me it is also affected by the charging port. Such a bummer, I hope they can resolve it ASAP.

It will heat up pretty quickly.
Or not. 72k+ miles on mine, always sits in the tray, never overheated, or got any hotter than when charging with cable. 3 diff iphone models, with and without cases, and never had the the issue--lucked out on that, but if I could exchange all the other issues for an overheating wireless charge dealio, I would in a heartbeat.

Oh, and yeah, I get it, I am in the minuscule minority of not having the overheating charge problem, but I am in Central TX, and it does get pretty warm (quite a few 100+ days every year), and my top is down (unless a heavy rain), phone in the tray 100%, routinely use apple music and phone maps / guidance while in the car, etc.

So weird. I’ve used iPhone 12,13 and 14 Pro Max’s, and all have overheated at some point in the try. And this was in Chicago in my 3 series, so not even getting the temp exposure you’d get in Texas in a convertible.

You’ll notice that if you place your smartphone on a granite or quartz countertop (without any case) while charging, it doesn’t warm up significantly.

The idea of wireless charging in a car is not feasible unless the surface beneath is extremely cool. We aren’t going to build a mini refrigerator for a wireless charging pad. Probably can’t have a fan either since the surface would need to have the inductive device underneath the surface. Maybe a top-loaded fan. In any case, wireless charging in a car will not be practical unless it’s implemented in a very thoughtful way.
From my experience with the Z4 design the main issue is that the phone lays flat in a space with no airflow. In other cars I own with inclined platforms that allow for convection cooling, where heated air rises and pulls cooler air across the phone in its place, the phone does not overheat. By providing a fairly minimal amount of airflow across the surface of the phone in the Z4 you can convect enough heat off the surface of the phone to reduce the temperature to a point where it will not overheat and shut down (in all but the most extreme cases). The Z4 specific fan I designed has resolved the problem for a number of folks on this forum.

Have Summer in the City as its my era for music.

That said here is the thing. I do not run WAZE for destination only for "BEAR" warnings when in Mexico

Use a two app setup. BMW to get the directions on my HUD & WAZE only in "on" mode to get it to display its map on the big screen. Use the turn signal button to get the music ID on the small place on the right side of the speedometer.

Works very well.

This is the cross your fingers and wait game. Not fun.

I wonder if members reading this thread whether or not affected would take a few moments to call BMW NA to discuss this issue. I imagine if BMW were to become inundated with phone calls on the topic, it might help. Maybe not; but it can’t hurt.

Remember- we are talking all 2 series, 8 series, and Z4 with the wireless charger.

Got some updates from dealer.

It's actually not about the wireless charger itself (getting hot or stuff).

It's due to the system won't know when you remove your digital key or phone from the tray. And this does not meet Federal requirement (I don't know how tho).

On Feb 17, the status is changed from delivery stop to Non-Compliance recall.

And BMW said it would have another updates within 2 weeks of that date.

It affects all 8 series (including M8), 2 series (including M2) and Z4 produced between Jun 29, 2022 and Feb 16, 2023 with wireless charging feature.

Hope this helps people who are waiting their car like me.
