The figure I got from a friend who lives in the UK is that a Z4 M40i is already cheaper in the UK. Sticker price is around $69k (US).

Does the cost of shipping to the US add to that lower price?

Well that’s actually inline with North American prices

In the USofA the M40i starts at $66300 (plus freight) and is around $74k (plus freight) fully loaded before any discounts

It's about 57k pounds which is 74k $USD... but don't forget about VAT... isn't that about 20%?

How do UK dealers offer a 20% discount?

I scoured the BMW website for weeks looking for my car all across the U.S. It s a great website that allows you to filter the results for the options you are looking for and the search area as well. Found my dream girl - Loaded M40 Frozen Gray - at a dealer in Delaware.

Got mine for $9k under MSRP, but it was technically used and had 250 miles on the odometer. I recommend finding a car like this with >1,000 miles on it and let someone else take the big hit on depreciation. If it must be new, your chances of getting a sweet deal are minimal.

I bought a $120 one-way plane ticket, $25 Uber, 2 hours of paperwork, and off I went. Drove it home from DE to TN in 12 hours. Very happy I did it. Highly recommend this tactic.

IF people are actually getting such discounts, it’s because said discount is heavily subsidized by BMW.

When I shopped last summer, they limited the search range. I'm glad to hear they've opened it back up to nationwide.

It’s zip code dependent 😜

It is, or was limited. But there’s a web site which aggregates the areas so you can search nationwide. That’s how I got mine from Chicago, living in South West Kentucky. Flew up there from Nashville, drove back.

The BMWUSA website shopping search hasn't changed. Searching for new cars, the range is a max of 100 miles around your selected ZIP code. Searching for pre-owned cars, you can select nationwide.

For new cars, you can expand the search by doing multiple searches with different ZIP codes. It works, but it's tedious.

That has always been the issue for a new car search on the BMW USA website. If one didn't know better you would think that they are protecting local dealers.

I wonder what happens in the states where the dealers can be hundreds of miles apart and a potential customer doesn't realize he needs to enter a different zip code? Does the search always show zero results or do they have the website programmed to give the available inventory at the closest dealer?

Yes, I used a website last year, probably the one you're referring to but I've removed it from my bookmarks because it hasn't worked properly for months (no vehicles displayed). Sorry, I don't recall the name of the website.

I assume BMW does this on purpose for some strange and insufferable reason.

When I bought an e46 M3 in 2004, my dealer found one for me from Chattanooga and paid to have it transported. This is what Audi does too. But these days, dealers aren’t enthused or motivated to go make dealer swaps proactively. The supply isn’t there, so it’s hard work.

But if you want a deal, you have to peruse dealer websites one at a time for the best results because most of the time the websites aren’t accurate anyway - tell tale sign is real pics but even then it’s not the case.

I'm sure a big reason is to steer customers to local dealers. I also suspect that many customers just want the closest dealer.

As for your second question, I just ran a couple experiments. I tried a couple ZIP codes in SE Colorado. One near Kansas border and one near the NM border. In both cases it gave results for the BMW dealer in Colorado Springs, tagged at 159 miles and 132 miles respectively.

I also tried a ZIP code in west central Wyoming. When I entered the ZIP, it popped up a window saying "Your nearest BMW dealer is closer than you think." and then gave 2 dealers in Utah to pick from. I checked them (one at a time - the only option). The mileage was almost identical at roughly 179 miles.

So it appears that beyond 100 miles you get to see one dealer's stock with it being the closest by default.
