Here's an idea- instead making heavy vehicles try to dance on the road like their cars, how about making their SUV's try to chase Raptors instead? Or out-climb a Jeep or Land Rover?

Thatís basically what the X7 is already, at a glance this looks a bit longer

Since BimmerPo$t keeps banning me from every forum I post in, I will reserve my judgement until the product is out. I'm sure BMW M will do a great job and the car will grow on me!

They study the market before making those SAVs. They obviously think that there is a demand for such vehicles. X7 is selling like hotcakes in South Florida.

They should have done the study on the M8 market...now it will be discontinued.

That is fake news. M8 GC will remain on the US market and you can still buy the other eight series body styles as M850i or 840i. Besides, people tend to forget that BMW doesnít just make cars for the US market.

In other news, why does literally every BMW critical post get a like from our AMG superfan jstein55?

Because as good as the 8er is F80NJM3 is correct. BMW should have done market research on that class of car, it is a very small niche that does not sell, even during its development the 6er of its time wasn't doing the best either, and a $100k+ car is a completely different market to cater to. And as much as I love MB, they should have as well, both the 8er and AMG GT4D (and even Panamera) are doing abysmally sales wise and likely will not receive a successor despite both being excellent vehicles, the market simply isn't there anymore.

Didn't realize it was a crime to appreciate someone's post

The rumours that have followed this are incorrect. You can still order an M8 in Europe, and other regions.
I believe it's the North American region that has postponed the 2021 model year.

Anyway here is the first stand-alone BMW M model. The XM.
If you think that it's a ridiculous idea -Mercedes-AMG are also planning an AMG based stand alone SUV. As are Porsche with a Taycan-type SUV. It's a big market and lucrative for Peformance manufacturers to plunder. Especially when offered with electrification options.

It's form is more like a larger X2 rather than the Coupe outlines of X4 and X6. The XM will be available as a four seater as well as the typical five seater.

I think they need to make it look more bespoke and special, especially if they are going to price this above the X7 (and as only a 4-5 seat giant SUV). BMW and MB seem to have problems on the rear end styling of their coupe SUVs, whereas Audi did a really good job with the Q8. I do want to see what they come up with, will have to keep an eye on the spy shots posts.

Those taillight clusters really protrude from the body of the car, and if you notice the edge that flows back into the body panel aligns perfectly to the swollen hips in the rear.

Also, the headlight clusters look really low in the front of the test car. I've noticed this as well on the next 7 series test mules, which I believe is the car sitting next to the XM.

This has a kinda has a boxy Rolls Royce vibe to me, how much you wanna bet BMW spins this off into a Wraith derivative SUV.

I understand why people buy cars such as the X1, X3, X5, and X7. It's when you start to seriously cut the roofline where it doesn't make sense anymore. i.e. X4 and x6. The x2 and what is claimed to be an X8 here (But I personally think it looks more like a Mercedes-Benz than a Bimmer, I mean look at the size of those headlights) aren't culprits of it to the same degree. Like the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Macan, the cargo compartment is cut somewhat shorter due to a higher rake in the rear glass.

Here's what I don't get. Why produce such a gargantuan SUV but then only give it four seats. Realistically, since this is the range-topping car, it'll feel similar 7 Series wearing high heels - Taller, and, to some, looks prettier, but it lacks the mobility of regular shoes. Sorry for the terrible analogy.

Companies are committing financial suicide by cutting down on sedans and wagons and instead focusing on SUVs. I'm a culprit of this, too. I drive an SUV. They're so damn tempting, but the issue is that SUVs are so much more wasteful than sedans and wagons. Car manufacturers get away with it since gas prices are ridiculously low at the moment. The second we have another oil crash, or by the time governments start to push heavier emissions/efficiency standards, manufactures such as Ford and GM will need to spend billions in R&D to rapidly develop new sedans and wagons since SUVs will be seen as wasteful.

The issue isn't just gas. There's also the fact these vehicles cost more to produce due to the simple need for more material. They're bigger.

TL;DR
The X8 at least makes more sense than an X6. However, it still hardly makes sense. An X8 would be extremely wasteful, and I don't see why people would buy one over a 7-series sedan or an 8-series Gran Coupe. BMW isn't Range Rover.

Anyways, I probably just wasted everyone's time. Sorry about that. Feel free to criticize. I won't feel attacked.
I don't think the dynamics of the next oil crash will be the same as the last one. OPEC knows we're on the brink of an electric car and green energy revolution and if gas prices reach $4/gal again that trend will only accelerate. Plus there are many options for mobility today that didn't exist back in 2005-2008 and the trend toward remote work is going to lessen the need for cars in general.

While this render is basically an X2 with a huge grille I have to say this actually works quite nicely on such a vehicle. In other words, it can work on tall, upright SUV fascias. On the other hand, in low, sleek, coupe-like silhouettes like the 4 Series it simply doesn't work at all.

Rather than an extra-large X2, the G08 X8 looks like it will have a Bentley Bentayga like look albeit more muscular/aggressive.

And not to mention the US became the largest EXPORTER of oil and gas beginning in 2018. Fracking technologies and our engineering prowess have eliminated our great nation's independence on foreign oil or gas forever should our govt officials step up. OPEC is not needed and we can control our market. V12's and Diesels for everyone here. Battery materials for these Electric Salvations are mined by huge diesel machines, the raw materials are finite and rare themself, and manufactured in massive factories burning fossil fuels to make them. The hypocrisy is unbridled. Electric cars are not and will not save the world. The costs to ruin precious Mother Earth mining the material and building the cars far overshadows any positive spin the Libs can put on it. 700HP and 12MPG all day for me. Merica.
