I want a prime lens.

I've been searching for a while and i'm thinking about a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D for my D40. Is this a good lens for the price?

any other recommendations for a good prime lens?

You will be limited to manual focus with that lens on the D40. D40's can't AF "D" series lenses, but require AF-S lenses. So that means the much more expensive AF-S 50mm f/1.4 ($480 at Adorama) is needed for AF function on your D40. If you can live with manual focus, then the price of the 50mm f/1.8 is hard to beat....

If I was going to get a prime, it would have to be something extremely wide like a fish-eye or a telephoto, otherwise I don't see the point for primes around the 35mm and 50mm. But given their cheap price, it's hard to resist a lens that only costs a Benjamin...

Since you can only use AF-S lenses, the cheapest prime with auto focus that you can get is the 35mm f/1.8. Should be $200 but they seem to be out of stock just about everywhere online last time I checked.

Primes can have much wider apertures and IQ is generally better. The only bad thing about primes is needing more lenses if you need the coverage. I love my 50mm/1.2 .

Never knew about this lens. I think i'll be getting this instead of the 50mm f/1.8D whenever they have some in stock.

Yeah. i was looking at the AF-S 50mm f/1.4, but i figured i didn't really need an AF that bad. Maybe i should save up for this instead?

forget the 50/1.8D, spend another $100 and get the new 35/1.8G and spend another $40 on a used 50mm f/1.8 "Series E" lens (plastic, econo-glass from 1980). better and smaller than the 50 1.8D and a fraction of the price. otherwise, get the AF-S version if you want to spend the money.

Shot at a school dance in near-complete darkness with my f/4 zooms today for the first time. NOW I know why I got that 50mm f/1.8!

I'm starting to like primes now...AUGH!
