He should start collecting the Mexican money before we start building it, not take his current stance of "we will build it and they will pay for it later".

The idea that this massively expensive project will solve the problem is a joke.

Why not?

I can't think of anything more fiscally responsible than that.

We'll have a ton of leverage in negotiations once the wall is already built.

I think this is wonderful. A 3000 tear old military solution (not sure what is the best word, strategy, technique, solution...) brought back to life will teach us all history for sure.

For some reason, if I decide to start a massive construction project the places I might try to get the money from want a solid plan for paying them back. I tried the "we'll talk about the repayment later, I have a lot of experience with construction projects, it will be huuuge", didn't work.

Trump said that or is this just your expert opinion?

If it's that easy to collect money from them with no negatives why don't we just collect the same money and use if for something that actually makes financial sense.

American taxpayers on the hook to finance 15-25 billion for a wall which Mexico will never pay for. What a great deal. How about take that money and hire a whole bunch of new border guards.

That would be more expensive long term, the wall can help the guard as well by slowing illegals crossing

The walls at the spanish enclave works well.

So far estimates are that we'll spend $700mm/year just maintaining the wall.

And that building the actual wall will cost $15bn - $25bn, since these are estimates, actual costs will probably be higher since that, in my admittedly limited experience, tends to happen with large civil engineering projects.

Where's the rest coming from? That's a rhetorical question since there really isn't an answer for it.

How will it stop drug runners who use tunnels to go underground?

$50 million a year into $10 billion is 200 years. Seems like a long payment plan and I don't feel like your plan is fully thought out.

I solved it make it a high rise highway with a solid fondation so if anyone try to go over they risk getting struck by a high speed car. A wall plus better highway system for all. Since it a highway that will give states incentive to keep officer for speeding and other traffic violations and maintaince the wall/road.

Ah the Great Wall, yes. Maybe we can buy it!

We have to do something because what we have now is not working. We have lots of border patrol folks down there now, That's not working either.

We have a lot of these guys in jail right now, sounds like a great source of cheap - free - labor.

"What we have here is failure to communicate, now I don't like this anymore then you do, but that's the way he wants it, so...He gits it." Edit, for those who don't recognize "Cool hand Luke"

We did our own experiment with walls in Europe after our last minor disturbance in peace, and even shooting people who attempted to cross it didn't stop others from trying. That is the power of desperation.

It is a huge issue, and a complex one. My answers are so hippie I'll save you all from reading them.

You should be able to buy it with that kind of money! Maybe china will even loan you the money to do it!

The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has been pretty steady over the last 10 years at around 11 million and has actually gone down over the last 6. The best way to stop Mexican's from coming here illegally is to give them good job prospects in their own country, ironically the opposite action we are proposing with high tariffs on goods from their country.
