It's finally here! Working with Emerald Coast Motorsports in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, we got the Z4 M40i on the AWD dyno. After getting it dialed in, we got some pulls completed! Car looked to heat soak after the second run, so we let it sit for 15 minutes before doing the 3rd run. Video dyno sheet are below. ENJOY!

Looks like it could be producing a fair bit more than the claimed 340hp then!

Honestly thought the hp would be more but the torque is impressive.

I think they claim 382hp stock at the crank, but 370ish at the wheels is definitely in the 400+ crank hp.

382hp 365tq at the crank is what it's rated at. Figure 15% drivetrain loss (very generous) that's 430hp and 500tq at the crank. Although this was ran in 5th (same as the Supra by Car and Driver) so the tq rating is a little higher because of it.

The Dyno technician said that running the Dyno in AWD with only power going to the rear wheels could also slightly fudge the torque number so realistically could be 450-480tq at the crank. But I don't know the semantics of Dynos so beats me.

What? Its wheel rating is pretty much it’s crank rating...that’s a win my friend.

Well considering the US Spec Z4 with the B58D engine was stated by BMW to put out 382 HP and 369 lb-ft of Torque at the crank, I'd say you're right.

He was nearly reaching those numbers at the wheels.

Yeah either way that is a beast of an engine!

I wonder what the euro ones are actually producing.

The EU version has extra emission equipment that lowers the HP output

The PPF/GPF only lowered the M40i by around 6hp though.

It's more than just that. EU countries get the lower output B58B30M1. Whereas Non-EU countries get the higher output B58B30O1.

Yep things seem to have flipped reversed! US used to be much stricter than here with these things!

Apparently you’re even allowed the Supra this time!

Great results and thanks for going to the effort! Yeah, the torque numbers look a bit off but the hp number is great....as you say, with a conservative 15% drivetrain loss puts the car at 430hp. Not too shabby!

When I took the M40i for a test drive and told my salesman that the car was quicker than I thought and closer to my f type V8 than I expected, he said that BMW ratings are way low and close to RWHP.....I took it with a grain of salt but it looks like he was spot on.

cheers,
Dave

Here is some info on the newer B58 version via BMW documentation:

This is confirmed in the new G05 X5 but not sure if it has been updated across the all models as of yet.

"The B58 debuted a few years ago but the updated iteration gets a new cooling system, head, timing chain, oil pump and a forged crankshaft. The block and air induction system have been modified, and the new high-pressure direct-injection fueling system is rated at 5,076 psi (350 bar), up from 3,626 psi (250 bar).”

Modern cars don't have a 15% drivetrain loss.

10% is more realistic.
