New M40i Glacial Silver/Cognac - Initial Thoughts

Picked up my new BMW Z4 two weeks ago after waiting for a few months from order. Version I have is the 40i with the Driving Assist/Executive/Premium packages and so far 550 miles and counting.
Been an Audi owner for many years and replaced my S8 with this new vehicle and wanted to share some initial thoughts.
Overall
  • Great car that is just fun to drive. Lot's of zip off the line and high end power that has never let me down.
  • Convertible is a blast to drive and car is meant to be driven with top down, noise is actually better that way I find and obviously more fun.
  • Handles amazingly well but to me, ideal are the single lane numbered roads with speeds of 45-65 mph...just fantastic driving.
  • Technology is really strong in BMW - not as intuitive in all cases as Audi but very impressive. Same for the fit and finish.
  • Blind spot monitoring is a must for me when driving with the top up
  • HK surround sound system is perfectly adequate. I'm not an audiophile but do like to listen to music and found it really easy to import my music onto the hard drive and listed to tunes, and given the noise factor of this vehicle inherent i find the system to be solid.
  • Trunk space surprisingly large
  • Color combo is nice - both selections were made sight unseen so I was unsure of how they would work out. Glacial Silver is much lighter than I expected with wife and son saying initially in low light they thought it was white. Cognac is excellent color for interior.

Quirks
  • Seat belt is a bit aggravating to me as it is too high on my neck
  • The instruction manual and online users manual are very weak. Not being familiar with the ZDrive nav/info system i have to figure way too much out on my own without adequate resources.
  • All weather floor mats are slippery on my right foot on the accelerator and i find foot does not stay in place with all of my shoes...small but annoying at times.

That's all I've got for now, hope this helps others. Happy 4th!

I have the same issue with the seatbelt. I wish there was a way to adjust it!

Congrats and thanks for the report. You've done much better than I have; I still have half a tank of fuel from pick-up (the weather has been crap here)

Can't say I noticed the seat belts and I don't have the all weather mats. I'm still trying to figure out all the electronic gizmos - figured it was just me! ;-)

I agree with all of your other comments; especially the fit and finish which I've not mentioned before - I thought it would lag behind our Mercedes and Jag but I've been pleasantly surprised.

Great write up and that would be my color combo choice. Beautiful.

Waze in the background through CarPlay while using BMW infotainment works quite well also!

Waze is a great choice for interstates & express ways where mostly laser is used and a radar detector is likely not alerting you in time. On rural roads or innercity where LEOs are parked on the sides or in oncoming traffic a radar detector still shines. Hence, using both has been my strategy for many years now.
Unfortunately, my Escort plug in does not fit into the Z4 socket and I don't want to hardwire it. Hence, I am driving without right now.
