As I understand it from BMW NA, this is actually what happened. Toyota agreed to the coupe and BMW agreed to the convertible. No crossing over between the two.

All the "M" variants since the 2000s had different hood treatment compared to their run of the mill brethren. Same model range non-Ms have NEVER had different hood treatment unless it's the difference between a coupe and sedan (E46).

In North America. In the Coupe guise. Overall the production number WORLD WIDE between coupe and roadster version of the M was closer to about 8,000 units.
