It's growing on me....

In a year or two, I'll probably retire my E90 M3 to mostly track duty. Prior to the M3 I had an NC Miata and loved driving with the top down. I think a roadster is in my future and the more I see and hear the new Z4, the more I think it might end up in my garage. Also considering a used 2016 F-type V6 Manual. That car sounds and looks so good and having a manual would be a big bonus. Would love to cruise the California coast in either of those cars.

One requirement would be to have enough trunk space for a bit of luggage and a case or two of wine. I think the Z4 might have the edge there. Anyone else cross shopping the F-Type and Z4?

The F type is such an incredible design. I can barely think of an (affordable within reason) car that still looks so good on sale today. I'm not sure if you've had a chance to drive the manual in it but some uk reviews said in this instance it didn't add to the equation.

I am huge BMW fan boy, hence the post count, BUT for me if I was cross shopping these 2 I'd be torn.

Z4 = Tech, weight, engine and recent model

F Type = Looks, sound

Edit: just to check is it the F Type convertible? For once I think the coupe looks much nicer

Choices choices! Good times

If you need any kind of trunk space, the F-type is out. I can't figure out what is taking up all the room. A previous model Z4 with a hard top as more room.

Agree the F-type is beautiful, and sound great. Especially the 8cyl one. It's also the one of the few that isn't drive by wire, and you can get a manual with. Electronics are way out of date. A lot of complaints about that I've read. The F's also depreciate way faster than the BMW (never thought that was possible.). Dealer had a 2 year old v8 F-type with 8k miles for $60k. Was $110k new. Was sold before I could test drive it.

The Top Gear Clarkson episode where he has the F Type vert and goes 'shopping' is incredible.

4:25 the jam

It's funny, I saw a guy from the UK on YouTube that has an F-type and has been documenting his ownership the last 3 years. One of the episodes, he talks about a trip to France where he fits quite a bit of wine and his luggage into the trunk.

Just out of curiosity, I looked on Turo and it turns out there's a guy in San Diego that rents out his 2016 F-Type S for about $120 day. I think I'm gonna rent it one weekend and try it out. There's also a Boxster S, C6 and C7 'Vette's. Maybe someone will have a new Z4 soon. Might be a way to "get by" for a bit until I can pick up a used 2019 or 2020 Z4 M40i.

Spent the last few weeks trying to decide on a roadster - the F-Type is beautiful... but the trunk is roughly the size of a large briefcase. Just no way to rationalize it.

Fun to drive, but I think the Jaguar is due for refresh. So if you want the newer car, you should wait or get the Z4. (Just a different aspect to what others were saying, not sure if it's important to you.)

after looking at the trunk of the Z4, i'm actually thinking its kind of practical.

9.9 cubic feet.

I owned an 05 G35 coupe a long while ago which ... amazingly has a 7.6 cubic foot trunk and if you aren't someone that is making costco runs etc regularly I think 10 cubic feet is totally fine.

These days with amazon and all these delivery services etc, I realize I need a huge trunk way way less. Everything large I ever buy is too big to fit in even my sedans trunk so having a larger trunk that is still too small isn't really a lot better than a smaller trunk

I currently own an F type V8S and just ordered a Z4 M40i. The F type is a great car and with the V8, it's brutally fast. It's also a bit heavy (3850 lbs, more for AWD versions), large for the segment and can be a bit obnoxious. Yes, trunk space on the F type is limited for those that care. I bought the BMW because I wanted something lighter and more dynamic and my wife wasn't comfortable driving the F type due to the size, visibility and ....well, it scared her - that may have been my fault.

cheers,
Dave
