Ummm... Yes, they do. Most modern cars have stored information about steering angle, throttle and brake pedal degree, speed, and more for quite some time now. They are technically called Event Data Recorders (EDR)

The Z4 most certainly has one, as it is mentioned in the Owner's Manual:

This is news to me!
Good that it currently only records in the event of a non trivial crash

Automakers can and do record all kinds of other stuff, like overrevs, ABS engagements, use of launch control, etc.

I drove my sDrive 20i home about 200 miles from the dealer a couple of days ago. I kept it below 4k mostly - driving very sedately - with one necessary and fleeting traffic induced buzz up to 8k, and a couple of brief 6k’s. I’ve done a couple of urban drives since.

I do like to ease my engines in, although I too have read that many people like to run them in hard (the argument being to ensure max bhp availability IIRC). I have had many new vehicles over the years, cars and bikes, and always gradually increase (and vary) the load over the first 1000-1500 miles, then do what I want. I’ve never had any problems and I’m sure I read that modern engines are run in artificially at their respective factories these days anyway.

As an amusing side note, the Suzuki GSXR 600 K4 run in limits were so high you’d get arrested attempting to get anywhere near them during normal street riding! Just looking at the throttle put you at double the speed limit in the blink of an eye!

I have always be warned by my salespeople not to go for long drives using cruise control during the break-in period.

This is interesting, I wonder why considering cruise control would keep the RPMs low at most times.

Because you should really vary your speed during break-in and the CC will try to keep the speed steady. If you want to use CC, just change its speed from time to time.

Here are 2 reference points:

1- When I visited the BMW factory in Bavaria I say them take M3s off the line, pour ,motor oil in them, start them up on a Dyno and redline them through every gear up-shifting and down shifting and brake in the brakes on the dyno. I believe they did this to all cars as a function check.

2- When I did the BMW performance school in Thermal California all the cars were brand new M cars with less than 900 miles on them. They certainly were not babied.
