Rod Bearings

I haven't seen much in the way of this topic and hopefully that's a good thing...

Has anyone replaced the rod bearings as preventative maintenance yet? My car has 80k on it and I'm wondering if its worth looking into.

OMG people won’t shut up about rod bearings on Facebook forums. Not worth any preventative maintenance unless you already have to drop the oil pan due to a leaky gasket, etc.

There’s nothing at all wrong with the bearings themselves. If they go bad it’s usually a symptom of abuse like lack of oil changes, beating on it before it warms up, failing to fix oil leaks immediately, etc

That's generally why I steer clear of Facebook lol

I hadn't seen anything that concerned me however wanted to get the consensus of bimmerpost peeps. Rather than the opinion of people who track their financed cars without insurance and then total them.

Completely different engine than the N55.

Read the engine manual.

Even if it was the same as the N55, how many REAL reports of spun rod bearings? I've never heard of this before on this platform.

Internet... everyone is a genius spouting 1/2 truths and fear mongering....

It’s a known issue on a number of BMWs V8 engines but I haven’t heard it on the B58 yet

There's a few reports, but it's normally do to user error.

Oil should be checked regularly, always keep it at max line.

Run 5w40, and change oil every 5k

Wait for oil to warm up.

Normally when the rod bearing is spun, it's due to oil starvation or not letting the oil warm up enough.

Never heard any oil starvation on a b58. It isn't a N55.

Not on this platform. Injector (cyl washdown), broken plugs and coolant issues are main topics that come up from time to time, but TBH there are a shit ton of b58s in service, so failure rate is not high at all...it's just what comes up often in forum discussion

From the research I've done, the early Gen 1 B58s have the injector and coolant issue, it seems they underfilled the coolant from the factory and installed a defective cap.

For injectors, it seems they revised them with a new part number late 2017, whether or not that fixed the issues from August 2017+ models, I have no idea.
